No. 3 Hockey Surges Past No. 10 Northeastern, 6-3

November 01, 2019 | Hockey

The Minutemen scored five straight to erase an early 2-0 deficit, led by Chaffee’s three-point night.

AMHERST, Mass. – No. 3 University of Massachusetts hockey erased an early 2-0 deficit by scoring the next five straight, rallying for a 6-3 victory over No. 10 Northeastern on Friday night at Matthews Arena. With the win, the Minutemen improve to 5-1-0 overall, 1-1-0 in Hockey East, while the Huskies fall to 4-2-1 on the year and 1-1-0 in league action.

"I'm very proud of our group, this is a very tough rink to win in" said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "For this young team, that was a bit of a statement game for us, but it will only be if we follow up tomorrow night."

Northeastern converted an early power play opportunity to take a 1-0 lead 3:05 into the first, which snapped a streak of 26 successful kills for UMass to start the year. Brendan van Riemsdyk redirected a puck from Jordan Harris at the net front for the Huskies.

Grant Jozefek then pushed Northeastern's advantage to 2-0 at the 6:31 mark of the opening frame, scoring on a 2-on-1.

Momentum then began to shift the Minutemen's way in the closing moments of the first period. Sophomore Bobby Trivigno stripped Tyler Spott of the puck in the neutral zone and skated in alone on Craig Pantano to pick up his fourth goal of the season at 16:17.

UMass promptly tied the score at 2-2 just 49 seconds into the second period on a 5-on-3 power play. A tic-tac-toe setup from freshman Zac Jones and junior Mitchell Chaffee was seamlessly finished off with a one-timer from junior John Leonard at the far post.

Freshman Matthew Kessel then put the Minutemen on top, 3-2 at the 5:26 mark, ripping a shot through traffic from the right point off a feed from junior Oliver Chau and Chaffee.

The trio combined for UMass' fourth of the contest, as well. Chau and Kessel picked up the assists as Chaffee cleaned up a loose puck in the crease and deposited it into the Northeastern net at 13:39.

Freshman Reed Lebster pushed the margin to 5-2, 15:53 into the second, crashing the net for his fourth of the season from classmate Gianfranco Cassaro.

TJ Walsh pulled the Huskies back to within two with a tally 3:29 into the third, but Leonard went on to cement the UMass win with an empty net goal from senior Jake McLaughlin at 17:35.

Northeastern finished the night with a 30-23 shot advantage and went 1-for-2 on the power play, while the Minutemen were 1-for-3. UMass won 37 of 67 (55.2%) faceoffs in the contest, aided by a 10 for 15 (66.7%) performance from Leonard over the dots.

Sophomore Filip Lindberg made 27 saves for the Minutemen and Craig Pantano had 15 stops for the Huskies before being relieved by Connor Murphy (2 saves) in the third.

The teams will play the rubber match of their three-game series tomorrow night, Nov. 2, at the Mullins center at 8 p.m.
