October 05, 2019 | Tennis
First-ever UMass tennis participant falls to Arkansas' Lauren Alter
"Janja fought well today and represented our program proudly at the national stage," head coach Juancarlos Nunez said. "We are setting new standards and I know she is the first of many more players who will compete at these national events for UMass tennis."
Kovacevic met Alter during the morning's pre-qualifying round, which included 96 competitors from across NCAA Division I drawn into a dozen eight-player segments.Â
Entering the weekend, Kovacevic was 5-1 in singles matches, and remained undefeated in her five matches on the No. 1 court. She also had three doubles victories at No. 1 alongside partner Martina Bocchi. Kovacevic is a three-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference selection and won the league's newcomer of the year award as a freshman in 2016-17. She also took home ITA Scholar-Athlete in each of her three completed seasons.
The ITA National Ranking & Tournament Committee, consisting of the 12 region chairs and the ITA Operating Committee Chair, is responsible for all selections for the championships. Only NCAA Division I student-athletes are eligible to participate.
Following Kovacevic's individual play at the ITA All-American Championships, the Minutewomen are next in action at the ITA Northeast Regional beginning on Thurs., Oct. 17, as well as the Brown Quad from Sat., Oct. 19 - Sun., Oct. 20.Â
