Minutewomen Take On Top-Flight Competition At ITA Regional, Brown Quad

WEST POINT, N.Y. and PROVIDENCE, R.I. - University of Massachusetts tennis completed its second day at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships in West Point, New York, and its first at the Brown Quad in Providence, Rhode Island, with nine members of the program in action at their respective events.

Four Minutewomen took to the Army West Point courts at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships for the singles bracket's round of 64 in Martina Bocchi, Janja Kovacevic, Jodie Annie Lawrence-Taylor and Anna Napadiy. Kovacevic and Lawrence-Taylor, seeded No. 17-32, claimed wins while Bocchi and Napadiy battled with seeded opposition but dropped their respective matches.

Kovacevic won comfortably with a 6-1, 6-1 margin over Amanda Chan of the University of Pennsylvania, while Lawrence-Taylor added a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Kat Muzik from Rutgers. No. 9-16 seed Chelsea Kung (Yale) bested Napadiy 6-1, 7-5 while Columbia's Shivani Amineni, a No. 17-32 seed, claimed a three-set battle over Bocchi 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Kovacevic and Lawrence-Taylor's individual wins advanced the Minutewomen to the ITA Northeast Regional Championships Round of 32; however, both dropped their matches to higher-seed foes. Kovacevic went back-and-forth with Boston College's Kylie Wilcox, a No. 5-8 seed, before ultimately faltering 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3). Lawrence-Taylor fell to Brianna Shvets, a No. 5-8 seed from Princeton, 6-3, 6-3.

ITA Northeast Regional Championships doubles play continues on Sunday, with Kovacevic and Bocchi back in action following Friday's consecutive doubles wins in the first and second rounds. Kovacevic and Bocchi will take on Iulia Bryzgalova and Marija Curnic from the University of Pennsylvania for the right to continue competing.

Five more from UMass tennis were in action at the Brown Quad, hosted by Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, as Ashley Avery, Jovana Bogicevic, Tami Comins, Sarah Mezini and Jasmin Tripathy completed a mix of singles and doubles matches against familiar opposition from Brown, Boston University and Darmouth.

Bogicevic and Mezini provided Massachusetts with its lone win during the first of two days at the Brown Quad. The duo downed the pairing of Mia Wallace and Katya Martens from Boston University in the first round of doubles action 7-6 (5).

Massachusetts concludes its place at the Brown Quad on Sunday.
