Tennis Completes Successful First Day At ITA Northeast Regional

Minutewomen win five of six matches on Friday, continue play on Saturday
WEST POINT, N.Y. -Â University of Massachusetts tennis won five of its six matches during its opening day at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships, hosted at Army in West Point, New York, on Friday. The Minutewomen sent two doubles pairings to the courts in Janja Kovacevic and Martina Bocchi as well as Jodie Annie Lawrence-Taylor and Anna Napadiy, while Bocchi and Napadiy also competed in singles.
The morning began with the first round of doubles action, during which both pairings claimed victories. Kovacevic and Bocchi downed Ambre Amat and Pia Schwarz of Buffalo by an 8-2 margin while Lawrence-Taylor and Napadiy bettered LIU's Elinor Storkaas and Bianca Compuesto, 8-4.
Kovacevic and Bocchi, who are seeded No. 9-16 for the tournament, took on Niagara's pairing of Megan Gamble and Erika Gonzalez during the second round on Friday and secured an 8-3 victory over the duo. With the second win of the day, Kovacevic and Bocchi advanced to the ITA Regional Doubles Championship Round of 16 on Sunday.
Lawrence-Taylor and Napadiy challenged Harvard's Natasha Gonzalez and Rachel Lim during the second round, but fell to the Crimson duo, who are a No. 5-8 seed, by an 8-4 margin.
The Minutewomen added two more wins in singles action on Friday, one each for Bocchi and Napadiy, during the first round of the main draw. Bocchi bettered Drexel's Sarka Richterova in a three-set battle 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 while Napadiy took down Boston College's Laura Lopez 6-2, 6-2.
Bocchi and Napadiy advance to the ITA Northeast Regional Single Main Draw Second Round with their wins, where they join their teammates and No. 17-32 seeds, Kovacevic and Lawrence-Taylor.
