Minutemen Win 15 Events In 200-92 Victory At Fairfield

UMass wrapped up its weekend by claiming the top-spot in 15 events on Saturday at Fairfield.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. The University of Massachusetts men's swimming and diving team won 15 events on their way to a 200-92 win on the road at Fairfield in the RecPlex Pool on Saturday afternoon. The Minutemen opened the day with one of their two relay wins on the afternoon while sweeping the top-three spots in four events.
 
The first UMass sweep of the afternoon happened in the 200 Free, led by Harry Ortof's time of 1:56.06 on the short course while Panagiotis Androulidakis and Dias Konysbayev finished in second and third to help the Minutemen to 16 points. Ortof grabbed another win in the 100 Free with a swim of 54.55.
 
UMass kept on rolling in the next event, the 100 Backstroke, picking up another 16 points as Seamus Trzewik-Quinn's top-time of 58.77 led the way for three top-three UMass finishers. Noah Witt was edged out in second by .11 seconds by Trzewik-Quinn while Sanjay Sekar finished in third. Sekar went on to claim the top-spot in the 200 Back later in the day with a time of 2:11.32 while Colby Vieira took second.
 
Ryan Pedrick's time of 23.92 led all swimmers in the 50 Free as the Minutemen grabbed 16 more points with Charles Rothenberger and Will Munstermann finishing in second and third, respectively. Emerson Kiefer helped UMass secure another sweep of the top-finishers in the 400 Free with a swim of 4:11.55 with Jamie MacDonald in second and Androuldakis in third. MacDonald added a win in the 200 Fly as fellow Minutemen Chase Kent and Brandon Musaku finished in third and fourth.
 
Ben Gryski and Luther Gordon combined for four top-three finishes across the breaststroke events, opening the day with a one-two finish in the 100 Breaststroke led by Gryski's time of 1:06.86. Gordon led the way in the 200 with a swim of 2:27.33 while Gryski took third with Tyler Pidde in fifth. Pidde won an event of his own, leading four top-five UMass finishers in the 800 Free with a top-time of 8:41.92.
 
Casey Ransford added a win in the 100 Fly with a time of 57.38 with Ethan Davey and Rothenberger touching the wall right behind Ransford. Al Madden closed out the day with a time of 58.61 to win the 100 IM as Konysbayev, MacDonald and Witt finished right behind.

Tommy Cotner led the Minuteman divers with a pair of top-two finishes, claiming first in the 3-Meter Dive after taking the runner-up spot on the 1-Meter board.
 
The Minutemen will be away from competition next weekend before returning to the pool on Oct. 26 as they host NJIT at 11 a.m. in the home opener.
