UMass' Barnsby Throws No-Hitter In 1-0 Win Over Northeastern
April 22, 1997 | Baseball
UMass advances to Beanpot finals on Thursday at 2 p.m. vs. Harvard
BOSTON – Junior Scott Barnsby (Torrington, Conn.) threw the first nine-inning no-hitter at UMass since 1957 to lead No. 28 UMass to a 1-0 win over Northeastern in the semifinals of the Eighth Annual Beanpot Tournament Tuesday afternoon at Fenway Park. UMass, which has won 11 straight, improves to 21-6 on the season and advances to its second consecutive Beanpot Championship on Thursday, April 24 at 2 p.m. against Harvard. Harvard advanced by downing Boston College, 9-2, in Tuesday's first semifinal. Northeastern falls to 18-12 and will face Boston College in the seven-inning consolation game on Thursday at 11 a.m.
Barnsby becomes the first UMass pitcher to throw a nine-inning no-hitter since Ralph Lumenti on April 13, 1957 when Lumenti struck out 18 batters in a 2-0 defeat of Rhode Island in Amherst. It was also the first no-hitter at Fenway Park since Dave Morehead of the Red Sox threw one in a 2-0 defeat of Cleveland on September 16, 1965. Barnsby walked two and struck out three to improve to 3-0 on the season with his second complete game of the year.
"I had the adrenaline pumping and just tried to stay within myself," said Barnsby. "Coming off the last couple of outings in which I struggled a bit, this was very special for me. Everybody dreams of throwing a no-hitter, but you really don't spend much time thinking about it."
Sophomore third baseman Adam Correa (Amherst, Mass.) had two hits for the Minutemen, including the game-winning RBI single in the fifth, driving in junior first baseman David Giglio (Norwalk, Conn.), who singled and stole second. Giglio also pounded out two hits for UMass to extend his hitting streak to five games.
UMass made its debut in the Beanpot last year, defeating Northeastern, 1-0, in the finals behind a complete game four-hit shutout by Barnsby, in which he struck out a career-high 11 and walked none. Barnsby has now thrown 18 consecutive shutout innings in Fenway Park.
UMass will play at Central Connecticut on Wednesday at 3 p.m. before heading back to Boston for the Beanpot finals on Thursday.
