Tennis Battles Back For 4-3 Win At St. John's
January 27, 2019 | Tennis
Minutewomen trailed 3-1 before winning final three matches of the night
QUEENS, N.Y. - University of Massachusetts tennis rallied for a 4-3 win over defending Big East Conference Champions St. John's at Cunningham Park in Queens, New York, on Sunday evening. The Minutewomen dropped the doubles point and trailed 3-1 before back-to-back-to-back match victories pushed the Maroon and White to the comeback triumph.
The win improves the Maroon and White to 2-0 on the season while the Red Storm fall to 1-1.
"I couldn't be more proud of our effort and the way we fought back from being down, 3-1," head coach Juancarlos Nunez said. "St. John's is a tough, scrappy team and they brought everything they had at us. It took a lot of grit and character for our girls to pull off the win and they should be incredibly proud of themselves."
Massachusetts dropped the doubles point and singles matches at No. 1 and No. 4 before wins at No. 2, 3, 5 and 6 secured the come-from-behind win.
St. John's worked ahead with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Janja Kovacevic faltered alongside Jodie Lawrence-Taylor at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, while Martina Bocchi and Anna Napadiy also lost at No. 2 doubles by an identical score.
Jasmin Tripathy briefly tied the match at 1-all as she put forth a dominant effort at No. 6 singles in a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Jenelle Downer. However, the tie match was short-lived as Najah Dawson best Napadiy 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 before Jessica Livianu worked past Kovacevic for a 7-6, 6-0 outcome.Â
Now facing elimination with one more loss, Massachusetts responded with three consecutive wins for the dual-match victory over the Red Storm.
Ruth Crawford rallied back from a 3-0 deficit to Oceane Garibal in the third set at No. 3 en route to a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory as UMass pulled back within 3-2. Lawrence-Taylor tied it at 3-all with her win at No. 2 singles over Olaya Inclan Solis 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.
One final three-set battle decided the victor as Bocchi went back-and-forth with Gabriela Tenorio at No. 5 singles. Bocchi lost the first set 7-6 before she rallied back with 7-5 and 6-4 wins in the second and third sets respectively for the match and team win.
