Four Minutemen scored in double-figures led by Luwane Pipkins’ 19 points and Carl Pierre’s 16.
DAYTON, Ohio – Four Minutemen scored double-figures led by Luwane Pipkins' 19 points and Carl Pierre's 16 as UMass came up just short in a tough road battle on Sunday afternoon at Dayton, 72-67. UMass (7-9 Overall, 0-3 Atlantic 10) shot over 54-percent in the final 20 minutes to tie the contest up at 63-63 for the first time since the opening moments with just over seven minutes left in regulation.
Rashaan Holloway added 10 points for UMass on 5-of-5 shooting from the field to put the UMass center at 78-percent shooting on the season while connecting on 24 of his last 25 field goal attempts in the last five contests. Djery Baptiste added a new collegiate career-high 10 rebounds for a UMass squad that out-rebounded the Flyers 37-to-26 on the afternoon.
Dayton (11-5 Overall, 3-0 Atlantic 10) took early control with an 8-0 run from the tip before the Minutemen settled in on both ends of the floor. UMass stormed back to cut a 10-point Dayton lead down to three on a Jonathan Laurent steal and dunk with five minutes left while holding the Flyers without a field goal for two-plus minutes to end the first.
Keon Clergeot scored all 10 of his points in a hurry to open up the second half, connecting on a pair of shots from range to go along with a layup in the first three minutes of play all while cutting the Dayton lead down to two points at 43-41. Clergeot's ninth and 10th points in the first minutes helped spark the Minuteman offense as Pierre followed shortly after with back-to-back 3-pointers.
After a Curtis Cobb 3-pointer at the 11-minute mark trimmed the UMass deficit to a point once again, the home team answered back with another 3-pointer of their own to eventually extend their lead to as many as seven points while connecting on 5-of-6 from the field to go ahead 61-55 before going on four-minute drought from the field. The Flyers shot 24-of-51 (47.1-percent) from the field and 11-of-19 (57.9-percent) from range on the day.
Pierre came up with another answer from range, connecting on the seventh UMass triple in 10 attempts in the second half to pull the Minutemen within three. A lose ball heading out-of-bounds that was saved by Pipkins and thrown under the hoop to Pierre tied things up at 63-63, the first tie of the afternoon since the opening tip. Pipkins finished with seven assists to go along with eight rebounds and his team-high 19 points.
After a Pipkins steal and layup that knotted things up at 65-65, Dayton's Jalen Crutcher hit one of his four 3-pointers with just over a minute left to give his team a 70-67 lead before a missed layup and a defensive rebound led to a pair of free throws at the other end to ice the game.
The Minutemen return home to the Mullins Center on Wednesday, Jan. 16 for a 7 p.m. matchup against George Mason.
