Minutewomen Cap Brown Invitational Against Stony Brook

UMass tennis claims nine of 12 matches over the Seawolves
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - University of Massachusetts tennis concluded its play at the 2018 Brown Invitational with wins in nine of 12 matches against Stony Brook on Sunday. The squad will continue its fall slate at the Bulldog Invitational, hosted by Yale University, from Fri., Sept. 28 - Sun., Sept. 30.
"I'm very happy with the weekend because we learned a lot about ourselves and each other in our first opportunity to compete," head coach Juancarlos Nunez said. "We were challenged by three strong teams and are a better team today because of it. I'm excited to see us take the things we learned this week and get back to work as we prepare for another opportunity to compete next weekend."
Massachusetts took three of the four doubles matches with wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4. Janja Kovacevic and Jodie Lawrence-Taylor stepped to the No. 1 doubles court and claimed a 6-0 shutout of Maria Pinto Ribeiro and Sasha Bekirova while Ruth Crawford and Martina Bocchi added a 6-4 triumph over Nolwenn Cardoso and Ester Chikvashvilli. Jasmin Tripathy and Jovana Bogicevic added a 6-4 victory against Anastasia Koniaev and Mia Wong at No. 4.
The Minutewomen claimed victory in the No. 1 - No. 6 singles match, led by Kovacevic's 6-3, 6-1 decision over Jamie Wei at No. 1 singles.
Lawrence-Taylor fought back for a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 2 singles and Crawford secured a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Bekirova at No. 3. Bocchi filled the No. 4 singles role with a 6-2, 7-6 (3) outcome while Anna Napadiy added a 6-2, 6-0 win over Cardoso. At No. 6, Tripathy downed Chikvashvilli 6-1, 6-4.
