Tennis Starts 2018-19 With Strong Team Effort Over Rutgers, Stony Brook

Minutewomen won six matches over Scarlet Knights, Seawolves
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - University of Massachusetts tennis opened its 2018-19 slate with a strong team-wide showing against Rutgers and Stony Brook at the Brown Invitational on Friday. Massachusetts won six total matches, including four in singles play. The Minutewomen continue the season with the second day of competition at the Brown Invitational on Sat., Sept. 22.
Jodie Lawrence-Taylor and Martina Bocchi claimed a 6-4 win over Maya Jacobs and Kristina Zahare in No. 1 doubles while Janja Kovacevic and Ashley Avery teamed up for a 6-3 victory over Sydney Kaplan and Jaci Cochrane at No. 3. Ruth Crawford and Anna Napadiy fell at No. 2 doubles to Kat Muzik and Tess Fisher.
In singles action, UMass took home the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 and No. 7 matches. Kovacevic downed Jacobs, 6-2, 7-6 (5) at No. 2 while Lawrence-Taylor earned a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 triumph at No. 3. Bocchi fought back at No. 5 for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over Muzik. Lawrence-Taylor was one of two Minutewomen rookies who claimed decisive wins in her collegiate debut, alongside classmate Jasmin Tripathy.
Tripathy competed at No. 7 against Rutgers' Kyra Yap for a 6-2, 6-1 outcome in her first collegiate match while Avery played a match against Stony Brook's No. 7 player, Ester Chikvashvili. Crawford stepped onto the No. 1 court for the Minutewomen while Napadiy took on Cochrane at No. 5 and Jovana Bogicevic played at No. 6.
