Cooper’s Double Overtime Goal Lifts Minutewomen Past Lock Haven, 4-3
September 14, 2018 | Field Hockey
Louw nets fifth multi-goal game of season in conference opener
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts sophomore Lucy Cooper took a perfect feed in front of the left post from junior Antonet Louw and one-timed the pass into the cage, giving the Minutewomen a 4-3 double overtime win over Lock Haven on Friday at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. The victory improves the Maroon and White to 3-4 on the season and 1-0 in the Atlantic 10, while Lock Haven is now 4-3 and 0-1 in the league.
Cooper and Louw each potted two goals in the back-and-forth match, giving Cooper her second career multi-goal game and first since her collegiate debut on Aug. 25, 2017. Louw has scored twice in all five games she has found the back of the cage, totaling 10 goals on the season.
In goal, freshman Johanna von dem Borne preserved the outcome with three saves for the Minutewomen. Lock Haven's Brianna DeAngelis came up with seven stops, including three in the extra sessions.
Louw opened the scoring in the ninth minute of the game. In a play originating on the stick of junior Sophie de Jonge, the ball came to Louw in the middle of the circle before she took two steps and blasted a reverse-stick shot above DeAngelis for a 1-0 UMass lead. That tally was quickly answered in the 14th minute when Lock Haven's Taryn Piano buried a rebound on a penalty corner.
The score remained even at one-apiece until the 45th minute when Cooper inserted a corner to sophomore Bailey McNamara, setting up Louw to step to the ball and rip it through traffic and right of DeAngelis. Less than four minutes later, Kayla Brathwaite equalized for the Bald Eagles on a shot that von dem Borne initially knocked down but would ultimately trickle through.
UMass appeared to have the victory locked up after Cooper's first goal of the season in the 67th minute. After Louw fired on a corner, graduate student Clodagh Moloney jammed at the rebound before Cooper slipped behind the goalkeeper and tapped the carom into the cage. But just as was the case on the opening two markers for the Minutewomen, Lock Haven countered with just over a minute on the clock to force overtime.
In the first extra session the Minutewomen put three shots on target but DeAngelis was outstanding and kept the match alive as a result. Cooper finally sent the fans home happy in the 84th minute with her second goal of the afternoon.
The edge on penalty corners for the day went to the Minutewomen by a 9-6 margin, as did total shots (25-12) and shots on goal (11-6).
Massachusetts breaks from conference action on Sun., Sept. 16 with a 1 p.m. game at No. 18 nationally ranked Harvard.
