No. 18 Harvard Tops Massachusetts Field Hockey, 4-0
September 16, 2018 | Field Hockey
Harvard’s Natalie Sicher posted a hat trick in the matchup
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard's Natalie Sicher scored in the 10th, 22nd and 63rd minutes and Kiley Allen added one more late as the No. 18 nationally ranked Crimson defeated University of Massachusetts field hockey, 4-0, on Sunday at Berylson Field. The Minutewomen are 3-5 following the setback and Harvard is now 5-1.
Both teams battled heat throughout the match, which was briefly paused in the second half to allow the sides time to hydrate.
Freshman Johanna von dem Borne collected eight saves on the day for Massachusetts, while Harvard's Ellie Shahbo and Callie Rennyson split time in the cage and combined for the clean sheet.
Both teams traded possessions throughout the contest, but Harvard's pressure defensively minimized chances at the scoreboard for the Maroon and White. The best opportunity for the visiting squad came in the 12th minute when sophomore Lucy Cooper inserted a penalty corner that came to junior Antonet Louw before a shot from Louw was blocked.
Sicher put the Crimson on the board after putting away a rebound, then doubled the lead for the home side finishing a beautifully-timed pass from Allen. Tessel Huibregtsen assisted on Sicher's final tally before Allen rounded out the scoring in the 69th minute.
The Crimson peppered a total of 12 on-target shots and also had the edge in corners, 4-1.
Massachusetts now embarks on a two-game Atlantic 10 trip to Philadelphia, beginning that stretch at La Salle at 3 p.m. on Fri., Sept. 21.
