Wolverines erupt for three tallies before halftime

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts field hockey battled with No. 5 nationally ranked Michigan, but the Wolverines tagged the home squad for three quick goals before halftime and added two more in the final stanza, taking a 5-0 decision on Friday night at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. Both teams are 1-2 following the contest.

Freshman goalkeeper Johanna von dem Borne (1-2) finished the night with 13 saves for the Minutewomen, while redshirt freshman Megan Davies made her collegiate debut and tallied four stops in the final 12:53 of play.

Emma Way had two goals for the Wolverines while Meg Dowthwaite had three points on a goal plus a helper.

Michigan found the scoreboard in the 26th minute when Way put home a reverse stick shot, taking a feed from Dowthwaite. Moments later, the visiting squad doubled its lead. With Halle O'Neill camped at the right post, Dowthwaite directed a shot that was deflected into the cage by Dowthwaite.

Von dem Borne made several noteworthy saves throughout the contest, notably one on a first half penalty stroke awarded to Kayla Reed. Von dem Borne took one step to her right and kicked Reed's shot away, keeping the deficit at two.

In the 33rd minute Dowthwaite inked her name into the goal column, swelling the advantage to 3-0 heading into halftime.

Michigan's second half tallies came via Way in the 37th minute and Regan Leavitt in the 60th minute.

UMass' best opportunity to get on the board came in the 51st minute. Georgie McTear carried the ball through the midfield and found Courtney Ocasal with a nicely-timed pass, but before Ocasal could beat Michigan's Anna Spieker, the goalkeeper dove to her right as Ocasal's shot went sailing wide of the cage.

Massachusetts looks to return to the win column on Sun., Sept. 2 in a 1 p.m. game at Vermont.
