Louw Carries Minutewomen Over Northeastern, 2-1

Junior transfer and South Africa native posts four-goal weekend; von dem Borne makes seven saves
DURHAM, N.H. – University of Massachusetts forward Antonet Louw once again was instrumental offensively, scoring both UMass goals as the Minutewomen defeated Northeastern, 2-1, on Sunday at Memorial Field in the Wildcat Classic. Louw wraps up her first weekend of collegiate hockey with four goals on 10 on-target shots.
The win brings UMass to an even 1-1 record on the young season, while the Huskies fall to 0-2 early.
Freshman Johanna von dem Borne made seven saves for her first career win in the cage. Northeastern's Julia Gluyas made 10 stops in the loss.
Louw worked quickly, putting Massachusetts on the board in just the eighth minute. Sophomore Georgie McTear opened the sequence with an entry feed from the midfield before connecting with Louw, who went 1-on-1 with Gluyas and beat the opposing goalkeeper for the opening marker.
Just out of halftime, the Huskies clawed back with the equalizer. In the 38th minute Camille O'Conor sent a short pass to Lexie Dunleavy before Dunleavy returned the favor and O'Conor found the cage from the low right side.
After O'Conor's goal Northeastern was awarded three penalty corners in a span of roughly seven minutes. But von dem Borne and the UMass thwarted each opportunity and kept the scored tied at one-apiece. Similarly, the Maroon and White took two quick corners coming out of a timeout in the 51st minute, including one in which Louw rang the crossbar, but neither attempt resulted in a goal.
That changed in the 54th minute when Massachusetts earned yet another corner. Off an insert from sophomore Lucy Cooper and stop by graduate student Clodagh Moloney, Louw stepped to the ball and rocketed a shot to the right side and off of a Huskies defender into the cage, for what was ultimately the game-winning tally.
The Minutewomen led in total shots, 17-12, as well as shots on goal, 12-8. Both teams drew six penalty corners on the day.
Massachusetts now returns to the Pioneer Valley and prepares to open the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex on Fri., Aug. 31 with a 6 p.m. game against No. 5 Michigan.
