Antonet Louw notches two goals in collegiate debut

DURHAM, N.H. – University of Massachusetts junior transfer Antonet Louw knotted two goals in less than two minutes, but New Hampshire answered with a pair late in the second half to secure a 3-2 season-opening win over UMass on Friday night at Memorial Field.

Six Minutewomen made their collegiate debut in field players Mus Defauwes, Chloe Hillier, Sophie Johnson, Louw and Clodagh Moloney plus goalkeeper Johanna von dem Borne.

Von dem Borne made three saves in her first hockey action at the college level, while her counterpart, Kelsey Rudert, tallied five stops.

UNH opened the scoring in the waning stages of the first half. After being awarded a penalty corner in the 34th minute, Kayla Sliz sent a low, hard shot to the left side of the cage that was redirected home by Bailey Fanikos for a 1-0 lead.

Louw's pair came quickly and gave the Minutewomen their only lead of the evening. The South Africa native posted the equalizer in the 49th minute after finishing a centering feed from Lucy Cooper, then added her second marker in as many minutes. On the second tally, Johnson contributed an entry feed from outside the 25-yard line that came to Louw before she corralled the ball and gave Massachusetts a 2-1 advantage.

But the Wildcats would counter in the 58th minute. In the aftermath of a green card assessed to UMass, Tia Raspante tied the score at two-apiece. Soon after, Finn Caron notched what proved to be the game-winning goal at the 62:33 mark with an assist going to to Bloem van den Brekel.

UMass nearly reclaimed the lead at 3-2 in the 59th minute when Rachael Burchell put a shot on target, but Rudert knocked down the attempt to keep the ball out of the cage.

Once again in search of the game-tying goal, von dem Borne was pulled for a kicking back in Moloney, but the Minutewomen were unable to equalize. As the final minutes of regulation approached, a defensive save by Sophie de Jonge kept the margin at one goal.

The Maroon and White finished with the edge in overall shots, 11-10, and both teams put seven attempts on target. UNH wrapped up the night with four corners to one for Massachusetts.

UMass is back on the pitch on Sun., Aug. 26 in the Wildcat Classic consolation game and will face Northeastern at 11 a.m. from Memorial Field.
