Softball Splits Pair, Defeats Dayton To Stay Alive At A-10 Championships
May 11, 2018 | Softball
UMass bounced back from an earlier 4-1 loss to Fordham with a 6-2 victory over Dayton.
BRONX, N.Y. – The University of Massachusetts softball team dropped their first Atlantic 10 game of the season as they fell to Fordham 4-1 in game one before bouncing back to stay alive in the A-10 Softball Championships with a 6-2 win over Dayton in the nightcap. The Minutewomen (35-13 Overall) will get a rematch with the Rams tomorrow morning at a newly scheduled start time of 11 a.m.
Game One – Fordham 4, UMass 1
UMass' 12-game winning streak came to an end in game the winner's bracket semifinal against Fordham (32-21 Overall). The Minutewomen made solid contact at the plate all game, striking out zero times with six hits in the ballgame.
Erin Stacevicz saved a run in the opening inning after a one-out single up the middle led to a play at the plate in which the junior tossed out the runner at home for the second out of the inning to keep the game scoreless before Fordham scored the first run of the game in the third inning.
Stacecicz tied it up in the very next UMass at-bat in the bottom of the third after a Hannah Bunker single led things off in the frame. The junior sent a sharply hit ball to third base that bounced off a glove into the outfield, scoring a pinch-running Jackie Kelley from second to knot it at 1-1.
UMass limited the damage in both the third and fourth innings, picking up two straight outs in each frame to leave the bases-loaded for the Rams as the Minutewomen fell behind 3-1.
Meg Colleran replaced Kiara Oliver in the circle in the fourth-inning in the circle and shut down the Rams as the senior allowed just two hits in four innings of work. Colleran surrendered her only run in relief in the top of the sixth-inning on a two-out solo home run.
Offensively, Melissa Garcia and Amy Smith both pitched in two hits while Stacevicz and Riley Gregoire each added one. UMass looked to cut into the deficit in the fifth inning after a pair of singles by Bunker and Gregoire put two runners on before a close play at third and a double play on a liner ended the scoring threat.
Game Two – UMass 6, Dayton 2
The Minutewomen bounced back in the second game of the day to eliminate Dayton (31-25 Overall) from the tournament and secure themselves a spot in tomorrow's championship game, putting together eight hits on their way to a 6-2 win.
Oliver picked up her 18th win of the season and the first post-season win of her collegiate career, throwing 5.0 innings of no-run softball to go along with four strikeouts. Oliver came through in a pair of situations with Dayton threatening, leaving two Flyer runners stranded in the fourth and three in the fifth before being replaced in the circle by Quinn Breidenbach.
UMass provided five runs of support in the third inning after Hannah Bunker opened up the frame with the first hit of the evening for the Minutewomen. Stacevicz loaded the bases with a bunt single before Kaycee Carbone brought in Gregoire for the opening run. Cozza scored in the following at-bat on a wild pitch to extend the lead to two runs.
Madison Gimpl drove in a pair with a two-out double to the gap in left center to push the lead to 4-0 prior to a Smith RBI single to center field with two strikes to cap off the five-run frame.
Cozza picked up her 16th home run of the season and her 37th of her career with two down in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend the lead to 6-0 on a long ball to left center field.
Dayton cut the lead down to four runs in the top of the sixth inning, scoring once on a wild pitch and again on an error on a stolen base, but could not push across any more as Breidenbach sent the Flyers down in order in the seventh.
The Minutewomen will take on Fordham in the championship game tomorrow morning at the newly scheduled time of 11 a.m. and will need to win game one to push the tournament to a winner-take-all contest to follow.
