Softball, men's lacrosse combined for a perfect 4-0 week

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Sports Luncheon Committee awarded men's lacrosse sophomore Devin Spencer and softball redshirt senior Jena Cozza Student-Athlete of the Week honors on Monday. The duo will be recognized at the Wed., April 4 UMass Sports Luncheon in the Berkshire Dining Hall at Noon.

Cozza hit two home runs and drove in seven runs as the Minutewomen swept George Washington in their first road Atlantic 10 series of the season to move to 6-0 in league play. The senior recorded a .416 average at the plate with a slugging-percentage of 1.000, hitting her first home run of the weekend in the top of the eighth inning to lead UMass to a 7-4 game one win. Cozza capped off the weekend with five RBI and a grand slam in the fifth inning in a 15-0 game three win, moving her into a tie for third on the UMass' all-time home runs list with 32.

Spencer scored on all three of his shots, caused one turnover and collected a groundball in the men's lacrosse team's 11-10 comeback win at Drexel on Saturday. He scored all three of his goals during the second half, including one in the pivotal fourth quarter when UMass erased a two-goal deficit for the comeback. His first goal of the day tied it at 5-5 early in the third quarter while he followed later in the frame with his second of the day, which again evened the back-and-forth contest at 6-6. Spencer's final goal brought Massachusetts back to even a third time at 10-10 with 7:40 to play in the game. It marked his third hat trick of the year and his career.

Lunch is available to those who attend from the University of Massachusetts' No. 1 nationally-ranked dining services for $11.25 per person.

Softball (17-10 overall, 6-0 Atlantic 10) plays next with the Wed., April 4 double-header against Albany at Sortino Field beginning at 2 p.m. Follow the team on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook (@UMassSoftball).
