Leonard Selected As Hockey East Rookie Of The Month

The Amherst, Massachusetts native tied for second among the league’s rookies for points in the month of March.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey freshman John Leonard has been selected as the Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Month for March, the league office announced on Thursday. Leonard's honor marks his fourth of the season and first monthly accolade has he was previously named Hockey East Rookie of the Week twice and Player of the Week once during his freshman campaign.
Leonard helped the Minutemen to their first Hockey East Tournament series win since 2007 with four points on two goals and two assists in UMass' Hockey East Opening Round series against Vermont. The Amherst, Massachusetts, native had multi-point games in both of UMass' victories over UVM. Leonard led UMass' third period comeback in game one, putting the Minutemen on the board with a power-play goal after the squad trailed 2-0 heading into the third and later set up the game winner with 3.3 seconds to go in the first overtime. In the deciding game three against the Catamounts, he assisted Mario Ferraro's goal that opened the scoring in UMass' 5-1 series clinching victory and also added a highlight reel goal in the third for his sixth multi-point game of the season.
Leonard scored his 13th of the season in game two of the Minutemen's Hockey East Quarterfinal matchup against Northeastern to finish the season tied for the team lead in goals and first in points with 28. Overall, his five points tied for second among Hockey East rookies in March, while his three goals and 3.80 shots on goal per game were the best among all first-year players in the month.
