Crawford provides deciding match-point at No. 1 singles
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - University of Massachusetts tennis opened a three-match road trip through the State of North Carolina with a 4-3 victory over Charlotte at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex on Tuesday afternoon. The Minutewomen won four times in singles play for the team victory, capped by Ruth Crawford's improbable comeback triumph at No. 1 singles. UMass improved to 6-4 with the outcome while the 49ers dropped to 5-7.
Crawford willed herself, and the team, to victory despite dropping the first set. She later trailed in the deciding third set 6-5 (40-0) before the junior from Atlanta, Georgia, reeled off the comeback despite being down four points for the 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) triumph and the corresponding on-court team celebration.
Janja Kovacevic (No. 3), Anna Napadiy (No. 5) and Martina Bocchi (No. 6) also won alongside Crawford during singles play. Kovacevic outperformed Scott 6-0, 6-2 while Bocchi won courtesy of a nearly identical score; 6-0, 6-3, over Smith. Napadiy worked past Imparato 6-2, 6-3.
Ana Yrazusta stepped to the No. 2 court but faltered in a three-set battle to Lee 6-1, 2-6, 6-1. Laura Moreno filled the No. 4 role but fell to Safont 6-3, 6-2.
The doubles point went to Charlotte as the 49ers won at No. 1 and No. 3. Moreno and Kovacevic took No. 2 for the Minutewomen with their 6-2 win over Imparato and Scott.
The Minutewomen continue their trip through the State of North Carolina with a trip to Elon University on Wed., March 14 for a 2 p.m. match.
