Minutemen Rally Past Bucknell Again, 9-8
March 13, 2018 | Baseball
Kessinger posts ultimate game-winning run in eighth inning to help UMass to its third consecutive victory
Leadoff man Eddy Hart had a 3-for-5 day and scored a run and four other Minutemen in Ryan Lever (2-for-5), Kessinger (2-for-5), Alec Norton (2-for-3) and Voghel (2-for-4) had multi-hit efforts. Kessinger, Norton and Voghel each drove in two runs while Lever and Kessinger scored twice.
Kessinger (7), Hart (7), Lever (6), Cooper Mrowka (6) and Norton (5) all extended their respective reached base streaks in the win. Dating back to last season, Hart has reached in 13 straight contests. Lever and Hart extended their respective hitting streaks to six games.
A five-run third inning put Massachusetts on the board first, in part thanks to a sequence of defensive miscues. Hart opened the scoring by way of a Kessinger base hit, then two batters later Norton's two-run single brought Kessinger and Lever in to move the score to 3-0. An errant pickoff attempt at first base allowed Mrowka to come in from third and later in the same at-bat, Voghel would slap a base hit to left, bringing Norton in and wrapping up the frame with a 5-0 lead for the Minutemen.
Bucknell immediately answered with three in the top of the fourth, but the Minutemen pushed the advantage to 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth on a Keith Linnane single that plated Voghel. The Bison then matched that with a single run in the next inning.
That set up the Bison to post four in the eighth and gain their first lead of the afternoon. Tyler Wincig scored on a sac fly by Alex Baumann, then the squad capitalized on a two-out fielding error to add three more and go ahead, 8-6.
UMass sent eight men to the plate in the bottom half of the eighth to chip away and reclaim the lead. Luke Oliphant narrowed the deficit to one on Kessinger's RBI single, then an infield single by Logan Greene scored the tying run in Lever. Voghel proceeded to go opposite field on his sac fly and cross Kessinger with what turned out to be the game-winning run.
Carter Knapek (1-0) earned the win on the hill for Massachusetts with a 1.1 inning relief effort, being charged with four runs (one earned), two hits and three walks but posting two strikeouts. Zach Clevenger earned his first collegiate save with a scoreless ninth. Bucknell's Tyler Wincig (0-1) received the loss after UMass took the lead late. Wincig was on the hook for three runs and four hits while striking out two and walking one.
Starter Anthony Videtto went five innings, scattering six hits, three runs, two walks and a strikeout before he was relieved by Connor Donahue to start the sixth.
UMass improves to 4-3 with the victory, its third in a row, while Bucknell is now 3-10.
The sides will wrap up their three-game series in an 11 a.m. matchup on Wed., March 14.
