January 05, 2019 | Men's Basketball

Luwane Pipkins scored a team-high 15 points to move into 19th on the UMass all-time scoring list.

AMHERST, Mass. – Junior guard Luwane Pipkins scored team-high 15 points to move into 19th on the UMass all-time scoring list as the Minutemen fell to La Salle 69-60 in the Atlantic 10 conference opener on Saturday afternoon in the Mullins Center. Pipkins' 1,289 career points propelled him past Terrell Vinson (2009-13, 1,276) and Billy Tindall (1965-68, 1,277) on the scoring list while his two 3-pointers put him sixth on the career 3-pointers made list.

Four Minutemen (7-7 Overall, 0-1 Atlantic 10) finished with double figures in the scoring column as Keon Clergeot added 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting while Jonathan Laurent and Carl Pierre each pitched in 10 points on the afternoon. Laurent scored six early points to help UMass cut an early five-point Explorer (3-10 Overall, 1-0 Atlantic 10) lead down to a point at the 15:09 mark.

UMass used a 9-0 scoring run to grab its first lead since the early moments of the contest after trailing 17-12 to go ahead 21-17 with 6:25 left in the opening half. Pierre scored five points during the run as the Minutemen shot 4-of-5 during the span, forcing a La Salle timeout after a Pipkins steal led to a Laurent layup at the other end.

After a 5-0 La Salle run, UMass answered back with five consecutive points of its own before a Curtis Cobb triple, the first in the half for the Minutemen, at the 2:42 mark gave the home squad a 29-24 lead. Both teams finished the second half with over two scoreless minutes while UMass took a 29-27 lead into the halftime break. Cobb added a career-high 10 rebounds to lead all players.

La Salle continued their scoring run into the second half, posting a 9-0 run in over seven minutes of play as UMass missed eight straight shots to open the half before a Pierre triple ended the drought with 14:54 on the clock.

The Minutemen went on a quick 10-2 scoring run with under eight minutes remaining as Pipkins connected from range and twice from the free throw line to put UMass up 49-46. Pipkins scored 10 straight points down the stretch prior to consecutive 3-pointers from Keon Clergeot to end the game.

The Explorers used a 7-1 run over 1:14 of play to pull ahead 61-54 as the visitors connected on 18-of-21 attempts from the charity stripe and 13-of-14 from the 1:07 mark to the final whistle to prevent a late UMass comeback.

Atlantic 10 play continues for the Minutemen on Wednesday, Jan. 9 with the first league road contest of the year at Saint Louis.
