Five Minutewomen Land Atlantic 10 Postseason Honors

Four collect All-Conference spots; McNamara placed on All-Academic Team

MERION STATION, Pa. – A total of five members of the University of Massachusetts field hockey team received 2018 Atlantic 10 postseason awards, announced Thursday by the league office ahead of the conference championship on Nov. 2-3 at Saint Joseph's University.

Junior Antonet Louw was placed on the All-Conference First Team while junior Sophie de Jonge and sophomores Lucy Cooper and Georgie McTear earned spots on the All-Conference Second Team. Sophomore Bailey McNamara rounded out the accolades for the Minutewomen, earning All-Academic Team laurels.

A natural goal scorer, Louw ranks second in the Atlantic 10 in goals (22) and third in points (46), leading first-year players in goals and was second in points. Nationally, she enters the weekend tied for fourth in total goals scored. In part thanks to her striker role on attack penalty corners, Louw had seven multi-goal games during the regular season and helped orchestrate the largest second half comeback at UMass since at least 2002 with a five-goal showing at Northeastern (Oct. 19).

Cooper started all 19 regular season games and routinely sees 50-plus minutes per game. As a sophomore, she set career-highs during the regular season in goals (8), assists (12) and points (28) and is responsible for inserting on penalty corners. Cooper is currently riding a five-game point streak and had at least one goal in four of her final five games. As a freshman in 2017, the New Zealand native was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team.

De Jonge has served as a co-captain this season and has been one of the most consistent Minutewomen over the past two seasons. In addition to her seven assists this year, she has contributed greatly to both the attack and defensive sides as a central midfielder. Beyond the scoresheet, de Jonge is on the attack penalty corner unit as a stick stopper and plays an integral role in organizing structure on the pitch.

McTear started all 19 games during the regular season and, like de Jonge, is consistently on the field for near 70 minutes per game. A fierce competitor, she had 15 points on six goals and three assists, notching four of her six goals during conference play, also seeing time in the striker role on attack penalty corners. Previously, McTear was a 2017 NFHCA All-Region pick and A-10 All-Conference and All-Rookie selection.

An operations & information management major, McNamara boasts a team-high grade-point average of 3.873. She has appeared in all 19 games to date and made her first career start under the lights against No. 5 Michigan on Aug. 31. She has also received starting nods in nine of Massachusetts' last 10 contests. The native of Westbury, New York went on to contribute six assists ahead of the Atlantic 10 Championship and has shared the stick stop position on corners.

Massachusetts, seeded third in the 2018 Atlantic 10 Championship, meets No. 2 seed VCU on Fri., Nov. 2 in a 2 p.m. Semifinal match at Ellen Ryan Field on the campus of Saint Joseph's University.
