October 27, 2018 | Hockey
Lagunov scores the tying goal with 33 seconds remaining in regulation, Marc Del Gaizo adds the game-winner in overtime.
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – With the goaltender pulled for an extra skater in the final minute of regulation, sophomore Philip Lagunov netted the equalizer and freshman Marc Del Gaizo completed the comeback with the overtime game winner as No. 16 University of Massachusetts hockey rallied for a 4-3 victory on the road at Merrimack on Saturday night at Lawler Rink. With the win, the Minutemen move to 5-1-1 on the year, 2-0-0 in Hockey East play, while the Warriors fall to 2-5-0, 1-2-0 in league action.
"We've won some big games since we've been here, beating Ohio State and Northeastern and Providence last year, but this is the grittiest win we've had since we've been here," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "[It was] a game where we weren't our best, that the other team was playing very well and playing in there building and knows how to play here. For us to kind of take the punches and then, at the end, get the knockout is a good sign for our team."
Â
Merrimack jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 1:09 into the contest when Patrick Kramer tucked the puck behind UMass netminder Filip Lindberg with Logan Drevitch and Ryan Cook earning the assists.
Â
With the opening frame winding down, the Minutemen took advantage of a five-minute power-play after Sami Tavernier was whistled for a hit from behind. Senior Jacob Pritchard converted his second power-play goal of the weekend from sophomores John Leonard and Mitchell Chaffee at the 16:45 mark to tie things up at 1-1.
Â
UMass scored once more on the five-minute major as 1 minute, 5 seconds of power play time carried over into the second period. Chaffee hammered a shot home from the slot after receiving the puck from Pritchard and sophomore Cale Makar 31 seconds into the stanza.
Â
The Warriors countered, though, knotting the score up at 2-2. Jordan Seyfert capitalized on a turnover down low in the UMass zone and set up Patrick Kramer for the tally 7:51 into the second.
Â
Merrimack pulled in front, 3-2, just 35 seconds into the third period. Michael Babcock found Tyler Drevitch crashing the net with a pass out of the corner.
Â
With 33 seconds to go in regulation and an extra skater on, Leonard received the puck from Makar and sent a cross-ice feed that Lagunov buried for his second of the season.
Â
Then 3:48 into the overtime period, Marc Del Gaizo cleaned up a rebound from his brother, Anthony, and Leonard at the post for the game winner.
Â
The Warriors edged UMass in shots, 29-25, but were limited to 0-for-4 on the power-play, while the Minutemen were 2-for-5 with the man advantage. Lindberg (2-1-0) had 26 saves for UMass and Craig Pantano made 21 stops for Merrimack.
Â
Leonard chipped in three assists to cap a six-point weekend against the Warriors. Chaffee (1g, 1a), Pritchard (1g, 1a) and Makar (2a) all had multi-point nights for the Minutemen, as well.

UMass next travels to Durham, New Hampshire to take on New Hampshire next Saturday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m.
