Late Comeback Gives Minutewomen 2-1 Triumph at UMass Lowell

October 25, 2018 | Field Hockey

Lucy Cooper potted the game-winning goal in the 67th minute to keep the Kennedy Cup in Amherst

LOWELL, Mass. – For the second consecutive match, University of Massachusetts field hockey battled back from a second half deficit and claimed a 2-1 win over UMass Lowell on Thursday at Wicked Blue Field. Sophomore Lucy Cooper buried the game-winning goal, her sixth of the season, with 3:51 on the clock after junior Antonet Louw equalized for the Minutewomen in the 65th minute.

With the win, Massachusetts improves to 9-9 on the season while the River Hawks fall to 8-9. The victory also keeps the Kennedy Cup in Amherst for the sixth consecutive season. The Kennedy Cup is named after John Kennedy, an alumnus of both the University of Massachusetts and UMass Lowell and a strong supporter of athletics at both institutions.

Both freshman Johanna von dem Borne and redshirt freshman Megan Davies saw time in goal, combining for three saves on the day. For UMass Lowell, Eva Berkhout had three saves.

After a scoreless first half, a rocket of a shot put the River Hawks ahead 1-0 in the 41st minute. Jenna Berger set up Katie Lynes and after taking three steps, Berger whacked a shot low right past Davies for her seventh goal of the year.

Louw equalized with her team-high 21st marker in the 65th minute. After being awarded a corner inserted by Cooper, the ball came to redshirt junior Jamie Melley who connected with Louw outside the circle. After the setup from Melley, Louw then dribbled around two UMass Lowell defenders before splitting two more on the game-tying goal.

With the score now even at one-apiece, the Minutewomen netted the ultimate game-winner via Cooper less than two minutes later. Sophomore Bailey McNamara began the sequence dribbling down the right sideline and after cutting toward the circle, she sent a perfectly-timed pass to Cooper just in front of the penalty spot. Cooper one-timed the feed left of Berkhout to secure the tally and give Massachusetts the lead for the balance of the match.

Each side rattled off eight shots but the Minutewomen finished with the edge in shots on goal, 5-4, as well as penalty corners (3-2).

Massachusetts caps the regular season on Sun., Oct. 28 with a 1 p.m. home match against Atlantic 10 foe Saint Louis. Prior to the contest, the Minutewomen will hold their Senior Day ceremonies recognizing the five-member class of Rachael Burchell, Maggie Harrison, Jamie Melley, Clodagh Moloney and Courtney Ocasal.
