Kennedy Cup Rivalry Continues Thursday
The Minutewomen on Thursday will be looking to keep the Kennedy Cup in Amherst for the sixth time in as many seasons. The Kennedy Cup is named after John Kennedy, a graduate of and strong supporter of athletics at both the University of Massachusetts and UMass Lowell.
Senior Day Set For Sunday
Prior to Sunday's regular season finale against Saint Louis, the UMass field hockey program will recognize its five seniors and their families in a special ceremony at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. The group includes Rachael Burchell (Whitney Point, N.Y.), Maggie Harrison (Lewisburg, Pa.), Jamie Melley (Reading, Mass.), Clodagh Moloney (Limerick, Ireland) and Courtney Ocasal (Pearl River, N.Y.).
Recap in a Minute
A complete team effort on Fri., Oct. 19 helped the Minutewomen string together a comeback of epic proportions before ultimately pulling out a 5-4 victory at Northeastern in double overtime. After facing a 4-0 deficit midway through the second half, junior Antonet Louw was instrumental in the rally effort with four goals and added the game-winning tally in the 89th minute. Three of her five markers on the night came on penalty corners that were set up by senior Courtney Ocasal (3), junior Sophie de Jonge (2) and sophomore Lucy Cooper.
Both freshman goalkeeper Johanna von dem Borne and redshirt freshman Megan Davies saw time in the match, with Davies making seven saves throughout the second half and extra sessions.
I'd Like To Thank The Academy
For her efforts in the Northeastern comeback Louw was lauded with a number of weekly awards. In addition to being named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, the South Africa native shared the league's Player of the Week recognition, was named an NFHCA Honorable Mention Player of the Week and a co-recipient of the UMass Student-Athlete of the Week award.
Saving the Day
Freshman goalkeeper Johanna von dem Borne has seen the majority of minutes throughout her first campaign in Amherst, averaging 6.35 stops per game. That figure enters the weekend ranked second in the Atlantic 10 and 14th nationally.
Von dem Borne has turned in four outings of 10-plus saves, most recently an 11-save day at No. 16 Saint Joseph's on the rainy afternoon of Sun., Sept. 23. The native of Essen, Germany has been backed up in the cage by redshirt freshman Megan Davies.
This Week in UMass History
Sophomore Lindsay Abbott (Northampton, Mass.) scored two goals to lead the University of Massachusetts to a 3-0 win over Temple on Oct. 24, 1999 at Garber Field. The win completed an undefeated Atlantic 10 run for the Minutewomen and clinched the No. 1 seed in that year's A-10 Championship.
After taking home the postseason league title, the Maroon and White went on to finish the year 15-9 and reached the NCAA Elite Eight. Anke Bruemmer was named an NFHCA Second Team All-American and a plethora of postseason Atlantic 10 accolades rolled into Amherst following the run.
Next Up
Following Sunday's contest, the Minutewomen will place their focus on the 2018 Atlantic 10 Championship which begins on Fri., Nov. 2 with the Semifinal Round. UMass, which currently sits third in the league standings, has clinched a berth in the tournament hosted by Saint Joseph's and will learn its seeding late on Sun., Oct. 28.
