Clodagh Moloney scored her first goal as a Minutewoman on a penalty stroke in the 66th minute
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts graduate student Clodagh Moloney scored for the first time as a Minutewoman on a penalty stroke late in the match, netting what proved to be the deciding goal as the squad claimed a 4-3 win over Saint Louis at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex on Sunday. Sophomore Lucy Cooper had two goals of her own and junior Antonet Louw added one tally.
With the Senior Day win, UMass finishes the regular season 10-9 (6-2 Atlantic 10) while the Billikens wrap up the campaign at 4-12 and 1-7 in conference play. The Maroon and White will be seeded No. 3 in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Championship and face No. 2 seed VCU in the Semifinal Round on Fri., Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. Saint Joseph's University will host the entirety of the tournament at Ellen Ryan Field in Merion Station, Pennsylvania.
Prior to Sunday's match, the Minutewomen held a special ceremony recognizing the contributions of its five-member senior class, which includes Rachael Burchell, Maggie Harrison, Jamie Melley, Moloney and Courtney Ocasal.
Goalkeepers Johanna von dem Borne and Megan Davies combined for two saves on the day as each saw one half of play. For SLU, Sasha Sander made seven saves in the cage.
After the Billikens jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute via a Carly Kissinger one-timer, UMass equalized in the 27th minute. Cooper inserted a penalty corner to the battery of Louw and junior Sophie de Jonge before Louw slipped a low shot from the top of the circle underneath Sander and one defender. It was her team-leading 22nd goal of the season.
But SLU would counter soon after and carry a 2-1 lead into halftime. On a corner in the 30th minute, Kayleigh Fleming found Molly Feid, who left the ball to Jordan Besore for the tally.
A stretch of three straight second half goals later give the Minutewomen a lead they would not relinquish. In the 40th minute, junior Sara Davis evaded a SLU tackle and split two more defenders at the 25-yard line before sending a beautiful pass that was one-timed home by Cooper just outside the left post. The equalizer by Cooper, her seventh this season, evened the score at two-apiece.
Cooper would strike again in the 47th minute with her eighth tally of the year. Cooper inserted a corner to sophomore Bailey McNamara and after classmate Georgie McTear's shot was headed left, Cooper was situated perfectly to tip the ball down and watch it bounce into the cage.
Then in the 66th minute, Moloney padded the lead with a penalty stroke goal awarded after Burchell was taken down in the circle during a shot attempt. After the lead umpire assessed the stroke, Moloney calmly walked to the penalty spot and went low right of Sander for her first tally at UMass.
Saint Louis would not go down quietly, though, as Emily Wastell brought the Billikens back within one in the 68th minute. Wastell dribbled around two defenders from the right into the circle and blasted a reverse stick shot that bounced home for the final score of 4-3.
Massachusetts closed the day with a 11-5 edge in shots on-cage, as well as a 9-2 advantage on penalty corners.
