Massachusetts Rallies For 5-4 Double OT Win at Northeastern

October 19, 2018 | Field Hockey

Minutewomen eliminate four-goal second half deficit; Louw scores all five in triumph

DEDHAM, Mass. – In one of the most epic and entertaining comebacks in recent program history, University of Massachusetts field hockey eliminated a 4-0 second half deficit and rallied for a 5-4 double overtime win over Northeastern under the lights at Dedham Field on Friday night. Junior Antonet Louw scored all five goals for the Minutewomen, including two in an exactly one-minute span.

The thrilling result moves the Maroon and White to 8-9 on the season, while Northeastern falls to 6-9 overall.

The game-winning tally, Louw's 20th of the season, came in the 89th minute. On a UMass penalty corner, sophomore Lucy Cooper inserted to junior Sophie de Jonge, who left the ball to Louw for a shot that went into the top right corner to end the match and vault the Minutewomen into celebration.

Both sides had opportunities to end the contest in the overtime sessions before game-saving tackles and goalkeeping kept the contest alive.

Louw became the first Minutewoman to score three goals in a game since Sarah Hawkshaw had a hat trick in the Atlantic 10 Semifinals against Richmond on Nov. 4, 2016 and the first to score four since Cher King did so against La Salle on Oct. 30, 2009. Computerized statistics at UMass date back to 2002 and since that year, no player at UMass has scored five goals in a single game.

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Megan Davies made seven saves in the final 45 minutes for her first collegiate win, while freshman Johanna von dem Borne made six stops in the start. Davies was outstanding, particularly in overtime where she logged six saves including a flurry of three quick stops in the 71st minute.

After Northeastern swelled its lead to 4-0 in the 40th minute, Louw put Massachusetts on the board four minutes later. Louw skipped around a Huskies defender at the 25-yard line, darted into the circle and tapped the ball past a charging Julia Gluyas (9 saves).

The deficit was cut to two in the 59th minute on the strength of a penalty corner for the Minutewomen. Senior Courtney Ocasal inserted to de Jonge, leaving Louw to drag flick inches inside the right post. Exactly 60 seconds later, UMass moved the score to 4-3 when Louw cleaned up a rebound. That play originated when sophomore Georgie McTear drove from the top of the circle and after Gluyas knocked down the attempt, Louw was in front to scoop home the loose change.

Massachusetts finally equalized with 2:50 remaining in regulation. Not surprisingly, Louw launched a perfectly-placed shot on a corner that Gluyas initially got a piece of before the ball skipped into the cage to tie the score at four. Both Cooper and Ocasal were on the posts to jab at a potential rebound and assists went to Ocasal and de Jonge.

In the 74th minute Louw nearly sent the Minutewomen home happy, going toe-to-toe with a charging Gluyas before the goalkeeper and Northeastern's Ffion Thompson thwarted the opportunity.

The Huskies were first to the scoreboard in the eighth minute courtesy of a Rachel Campbell tally. Northeastern would build up its advantage to four thanks to goals from Melanie Weber (17'), Laura MacLachlan (36') and June Curry-Lindhal (40').

In spite of the scoreboard result, it was Northeastern that had the edge in shots on goal (18-14) and penalty corners (8-6).

The Minutewomen close out a three-game road swing on Thu., Oct. 25 with a 3 p.m. game at UMass Lowell.
