Tennis Closes Out ITA Northeast Regional Play In Round of 16

Kovacevic, Lawrence-Taylor's impressive singles runs halted in Sweet Sixteen
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - University of Massachusetts tennis junior Janja Kovacevic and freshman Jodie Lawrence-Taylor reached the ITA Northeast Regional Round of 16 on Sunday, but their impressive individual runs through the singles bracket came to a close with losses on Sunday. 2018 marks the second consecutive ITA Northeast Regional at least one Minutewoman reached the Sweet Sixteen, as current senior Ruth Crawford advanced into the 2017 quarterfinals.
Kovacevic, the No. 22 seed in the tournament, fell to No. 4 Miranda Ramirez from Syracuse 6-1, 6-3. Kovacevic's appearance in the ITA Northeast Regional Round of 16 marked the first-such in her UMass career. She reached the Sweet Sixteen with wins over Princeton's Nathalie Radilosso in the second round and No. 11 seed Jennifer Kerr from Columbia University in the third round.
Princeton's Stephanie Schrage ended Lawrence-Taylor's improbable run with a 6-2, 6-4 decision. Lawrence-Taylor, a freshman competing in her first ITA Northeast Regional, tallied three wins to reach the Sweet Sixteen. She outperformed Quinnipiac's Dominique Vasile in the first round, and betted a pair of ranked foes in No. 14 Melissa Sakar (Columbia) and No. 19 Natasha Irani (Boston College) in the second and third rounds, respectively.
The team's fall slate concludes at the Big Green Invitational with competition in Hanover, New Hampshire, from Fri., Nov. 2 - Sun., Nov. 4.
