No. 12 Boston College Tops Field Hockey, 6-1

October 14, 2018 | Field Hockey

Lucy Cooper netted the lone tally for the Minutewomen via a penalty stroke

NEWTON, Mass. โ€“ No. 12 nationally ranked Boston College claimed the lead on its first possession and would not look back, claiming a 6-1 victory over University of Massachusetts field hockey on Sunday at the Newton Field Hockey Complex. The loss drops the Minutewomen to 7-9 on the season while Boston College is now 9-5.
ย
Just 25 seconds into the match the Eagles took a 1-0 lead. After forcing a turnover, BC took possession into the circle where Brooke Matherson slipped a one-timed pass to Lucy Lytle at the left post. Lytle was able to deflect the perfectly-timed feed past a diving Johanna von dem Borne for the game's first tally.
ย
In the 15th minute UMass had its best opportunity of the half to equalize. Junior Antonet Louw dribbled into the circle with a clear path to the cage but was taken down from behind, at which point the lead umpire awarded Louw a penalty stroke. Louw ultimately went low and left with her shot but BC goalkeeper Jonna Kennedy turned her aside.
ย
BC doubled its lead via a penalty corner in the 33rd minute. Frederique Haverhals claimed an insert from Brigid Wood and after taking two steps in the left side of the circle, rocketed a shot into the cage. The Eagles would add another out of halftime, courtesy of Elizabeth Warner in the 38th minute.
ย
After the Eagles extended their advantage to 4-0 in the 54th minute, sophomore Lucy Cooper countered by putting UMass on the board with a penalty stroke tally. The lifted shot by Cooper ricocheted off of Kennedy and bounced high into the cage for her fifth goal of the season.
ย
The scoring for the day wrapped up when the Eagles tacked on two more in the home stretch of the contest, bringing the score to its final margin of 6-1.
ย
The home side finished with the advantage in shots on-goal, 16-8, as well as penalty corners, 10-2.
ย
Von dem Borne made nine saves and redshirt freshman Megan Davies also entered late in the contest. For BC, Kennedy had seven saves on the day.
ย
Massachusetts returns to the pitch and continues a three-game road swing on Fri., Oct. 19 with a 6 p.m. game at Northeastern.
