UMass was forced to deal with foul trouble down the stretch
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson College rallied from a deficit of 16 points to outlast the UMass women's basketball team, 87-81, in double overtime on Wednesday night at John M. Belk Arena.
Massachusetts had three double-figure scorers in the setback, led by 25 points from Hailey Leidel on 8-of-13 shooting and complemented by Bre Hampton-Bey (13) and Maggie Mulligan (10). Unfortunately for the Minutewomen, the squad faced foul trouble in the fourth quarter and into the extra sessions and ultimately were without the services of Hampton-Bey, Leidel, Paige McCormick and Mulligan by game's end.
Leah McDerment and Genesis Rivera each contributed seven rebounds while McDerment also came up with four steals. Mulligan had four blocks.
The Maroon and White did have a chance to steal a victory at the end of regulation. After Davidson's Mackenzie Latt traveled with five seconds left, Massachusetts called timeout to advance the ball. Sarah Donovan took away the ensuing inbounds pass, foiling the opportunity for the Minutewomen.
UMass opened the first overtime with a 5-0 run but Davidson proceeded to counter with the game's next eight points, a sequence after which the Minutewomen would not lead.
A strong first half highlighted the night for UMass, which would finish the night having led for over 36 minutes. The visitors closed the first quarter with an 11-4 run, in part giving Leidel eight points apiece early on. In the second quarter that momentum carried, helping the Minutewomen build up a pair of 7-0 sequences and later swell their advantage to 16 at 42-26. By halftime the Maroon and White were shooting 55.2 percent (16-of-29) and still maintained a 42-31 lead.
Coming out of halftime UMass was plagued by four quick fouls as well as a Davidson defensive effort that held the Minutewomen scoreless from the field for a stretch of six minutes. In that period the Wildcats fought back within five before tying the score at 49-apiece on a Donovan free throw with 1:06 on the clock.
The fourth quarter took on a back-and-forth nature with a pair of ties and three lead changes. Leidel had 10 points for the Minutewomen in the frame but with four fouls was limited to just two minutes.
Latt had a double-double with a game-high 31 points for the Wildcats to go with 12 rebounds. As a team, Davidson shot 36.4 percent (28-of-77) including 25 percent (7-of-28) from three-point land. In the fourth quarter the squad converted three field goals–all triples–to go with an 8-of-10 clip from the free throw line.
Wednesday's loss drops Massachusetts to 9-11 on the season and 1-6 in Atlantic 10 action. Davidson is now 9-12 and an even 4-4 against league opponents.
Massachusetts concludes a two-game road trip on Sun., Jan. 28 with a 2 p.m. game at Atlantic 10 rival Rhode Island.
