January 21, 2018 | Women's Basketball
Rookie narrowly misses double-double with 31 points and nine assists
AMHERST, Mass. – Freshman Bre Hampton-Bey put down a career-high and game-high 31 points to go with nine assists as University of Massachusetts women's basketball defeated VCU, 79-75, on Sunday afternoon at the Mullins Center. Hampton-Bey's 31 points are the most by a UMass rookie since Melissa Gurile drained 34 at Northeastern on Dec. 1, 1992.
Hailey Leidel contributed 16 points of her own over 35 minutes, while Genesis Rivera came off the bench to put down 13 points. Maggie Mulligan logged six rebounds and Hampton-Bey grabbed four of UMass' six steals as a team.
A pair of runs highlighted the first quarter, which opened with 11 consecutive points for the Minutewomen. Hampton-Bey would steal the show during the sequence, hitting an early layup to open the game before following up with a triple from the right corner. She had nine points in the quarter and grabbed four steals. The quarter ended with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Vashnie Perry from the left wing, setting up Massachusetts with a 25-14 lead.
The Rams worked to claw their way back over the middle two frames and moved the score to 57-53 by the conclusion of the third quarter. VCU strung together an 8-0 run extending into the final period, getting within as little as two, but a stout defensive effort by the Minutewomen kept the visitors at bay.
In the fourth quarter UMass was aided by early foul trouble for VCU as the Minutewomen entered the bonus with 6:28 on the clock. Amidst the 13 UMass free throws that followed, Leidel proceeded to hit her third triple of the afternoon with 4:24 left and swell the lead to eight. As the Rams worked to chip away, UMass countered with free throws to secure the win.
The Rams had three scorers reach double figures, led by 15 points from Tera Reed. Both Reed and Taya Robinson grabbed five boards and Nyra Williams had nine assists.
Both teams shot an identical 25-of-55 (45.5 percent) from the field. UMass had the edge at the free throw line, going 17-of-22 (77.3 percent) on the day including a 7-of-9 clip from Hampton-Bey at the charity stripe, all after UMass entered the bonus in the fourth quarter.
The victory, which ends a six-game slide for the Minutewomen, moves UMass to 9-10 on the season and 1-5 against Atlantic 10 opponents. VCU is now 4-14 and 1-5 in the A-10.
UMass now embarks on a two-game road swing and begins that stretch with a Wed., Jan. 24 meeting with Davidson slated for a 7 p.m. start.
