Kreucsh evens game, Hawkshaw scores eventual winner for Minutewomen
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - University of Massachusetts field hockey rallied back from a one-goal deficit for a 2-1 victory at Lock Haven's Charlotte E. Smith Field on Sunday afternoon. Melanie Kreusch provided the game-tying goal while Sarah Hawkshaw posted the eventual winner for the Minutwomen.
The victory improves UMass to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in Atlantic 10 games. Lock Haven falls to 6-4 on the year, including 1-3 in conference action.
The Eagles scored first on the game's inaugural shot, when Alyscia Smith converted on a long pass by Tamia Roach less than eight minutes into play.
Massachusetts responded in the 22nd minute and evened the game at one-apiece. The Minutewomen were awarded a stroke following a Lock Haven miscue in the circle. Kreusch stepped to the dot and converted the opportunity for her fourth goal of the season.
UMass added its second goal of the game early in the 53rd minute of action. Hawkshaw, the team's leading goal-scorer, deflected in Dijkstra's initial drive for a 2-1 advantage. It marked Hawkshaw's seventh goal of the season and her 38th as a member of the Maroon and White.
The defense held off any Lock Haven rebuttal as the Minutewomen silenced the Eagles' offense over the final 18 minutes of play and limited the home squad to just three total shots on the game. Lock Haven's only attempt of the second half was an off-target drive by Smith.
The Maroon and White led in shots, 15-3 and on-target attempts, 10-2. The squad also held a 7-2 margin in penalty corners. A physical contest, the game featured four cards, with two issued to each team. Emma Bressler and Georgie McTear drew green cards for UMass while Dana-Lee De Gannes and Roach were hit with yellow cards.
Massachusetts returns to campus next for the fourth Atlantic 10 game of the year as the Minutewomen host La Salle (5-3, 2-1) on Fri., Sept. 29 at 3 p.m.
