Kreusch's Penalty Strokes Guide UMass Field Hockey To 3-1 Win

Bressler adds first collegiate goal in victory over La Salle

AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts field hockey senior defense Melanie Kreusch scored twice and freshman forward Emma Bressler knocked in her first collegiate goal during a 3-1 victory over La Salle at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex on Friday afternoon. Both of Kreusch's conversions were via penalty stroke. Georgie McTear had an assist on Bressler's tally.

The win improved UMass to 8-3 overall and 3-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. La Salle dropped to 5-4 and 2-2 in league action.

Kreusch's first penalty stroke came only 86 seconds into the game. After a La Salle defensive player illegally stopped the ball behind Explorers goalkeeper Emma Provost on a penalty corner, the officials whistled play to a halt and awarded the Minutewomen a penalty stroke. Kreusch calmly stepped to the dot and knocked in the first goal of the game.

La Salle evened the contest at 1-1 in the 16th minute on Rialee Allen's second goal of the year. Mackenzie Karcher sent a cage-crossing pass to the right post for Allen, who pushed the ball into an open goal.

The Minutewomen jumped back in front on Kreusch's second tally of the game. After La Salle was called for illegally defending behind the goalkeeper for a second team, Kreusch duplicated her early penalty conversion effort for the 2-1 advantage at the 49:49 mark.

Bressler sealed the outcome with a skillful redirection in the 62nd minute. McTear rushed down the right sideline and slammed a hard pass across the circle toward the left post. Bressler raced onto the ball and knocked into into the back of the net at full stride for the 3-1 margin.

Emily Hazard earned the win for the Minutewomen with three saves. Provost totaled six while Summer Pierson had one defensive save.

Massachusetts led in total shots, 14-5, including a 5-1 margin in the decisive half. The Minutewomen also led in penalty corners, 6-4.

UMass takes to the road next for a Sunday contest at No. 1 Connecticut at 1 p.m.
