Red Flash third-minute goal proves the difference-maker in 1-0 UMass loss
LORETTO, Pa. - University of Massachusetts field hockey allowed a third-minute tally at Saint Francis and was unable to rebound over the remainder of the game in a 1-0 loss at the Red Flash's DeGol Field on Friday. The loss dropped UMass to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the Atlantic 10. Saint Francis improved to 5-3 on the year and 1-0 in A-10 games.
Saint Francis collected the only goal of the game less than three minutes into play. Following the opening penalty corner, Taylor Massage put in a shot via a Brianna Govia assist.
The Minutewomen had opportunities to even the game over the next 67 minutes; however, Massachusetts was unable to find the equalizer.
In the second half alone, UMass posted six on-target shots, but Red Flash goalkeeper Elizabeth Dyer preserved the clean sheet with a save on each try. Sarah Hawkshaw tallied the first of these only two minutes, 44 seconds into the stanza before Emma Bressler put three consecutive attempts between the pipes.
The Minutewomen made one final push in the last eight minutes of the half and nearly converted during a back-to-back shot series spanning the 63rd and 64th minutes. Following a timeout by Saint Francis with six minutes, 31 seconds left, Massachusetts went on the offensive again with the final three penalty corners and four more shot attempts, but was unable to grab the game-tying goal.
UMass earned a 15-6 advantage on shots, including a 7-2 margin in on-target attempts. The Minutewomen also led in penalty corners, 6-4.
Massachusetts concludes the Pennsylvania road trip with its third Atlantic 10 contest of the season. The Minutewomen play at Lock Haven in a Noon-time tilt with the Eagles on Sun., Sept. 24.
