Hawkshaw, Burchell score; Hazard posts second shutout of weekend
AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts field hockey combined first half goals from Rachael Burchell and Sarah Hawkshaw with a dominant defensive performance for a 2-0 shutout of visiting-UMass Lowell in the 2017 Kennedy Cup at Gladchuk Field on Sunday.
The win over the River Hawks kept the Kennedy Cup in Amherst for the fifth year in as many playing the rivalry game. The Kennedy Cup is named after John Kennedy, a graduate of and strong supporter of athletics at both institutions.
Lucy Cooper recorded an assist on Hawkshaw's goal while Emily Hazard made seven saves for the victory. Sara Davis preserved the clean sheet with one defensive save.
The victory improved Massachusetts to 6-2 overall while the loss dropped UMass Lowell to 4-4 on the season.
Hawkshaw broke the scoreless time less than eight minutes into play. Dijkstra created the scoring chance when the senior midfielder dribbled into the circle and crossed the ball through the River Hawks defense to Hawkshaw at the right post. Hawkshaw ran onto the play untouched and redirected Dijkstra's pass into the back of the cage.
Massachusetts doubled its lead in the 15th minute with Burchell's first goal of the season. Burchell made it 2-0 Minutewomen when she knocked in a deflection near the left post.
The defense sealed the outcome with a lock-down performance as UMass Lowell put eight shots on-target throughout the game to five by the Minutewomen.
In search of a game-changing spark, UMass Lowell kept pressure on the Massachusetts defense throughout the second half. Hazard posted three saves in the frame, including two back-to-back stops in the span of 52 seconds. The redshirt senior goalkeeper added the final of her seven stops in the 58th minute when she booted aside a Sophie Gehrels penalty corner attempt.
Davis secured the shutout with her defensive save of UMass Lowell's final shot attempt. River Hawk forward Torrie Huk unleashed a shot in the 65th minute of play, which Hazard deflected; however, the bouncing ball continued on a path toward the goal. Davis sprinted onto the loose ball and knocked it clear of the goal for her first career defensive stop.
Massachusetts heads Pennsylvania for a pair of Atlantic 10 contests next. The Minutewomen will play at Saint Francis on Fri., Sept. 22 at 3 p.m. before they travel to Lock Haven for a Noon-time tilt with the Eagles on Sun., Sept. 24.
