Horgan scores twice, Hazard turns aside penalty stroke in shutout win
DAVIDSON, N.C. – University of Massachusetts field hockey rolled to a 4-0 victory in its Atlantic 10 opener on Friday evening at Davidson's Belk Turf Field. Redshirt junior Grace Horgan contributed two goals, while senior Melanie Kreusch and redshirt senior Shauna Rankin-Bryrne both scored in the first half. With the win, the Minutewomen move to 5-2 on the season, while the Wildcats fall to 0-5.
Kreusch opened the scoring in the 12th minute on UMass' first penalty corner of the contest, knocking home a feed from freshman Georgie McTear. Rankin-Bryrne added the Minutewomen's second of the day on another penalty corner, the final play of the first half, tapping in a pass from Kreusch.
Horgan increased the advantage to 3-0 in the 43rd minute after senior Sarah Hawkshaw fed her at the top of the arc. She later completed the scoring for the Minutewomen in the 64th minute, redirecting a Rachael Burchell shot.
UMass out-shot the Wildcats 11-7 in the contest and converted three of four penalty corners drawn. The Minutewomen turned aside all four shots Davidson put on target with redshirt senior Emily Hazard registering three saves and freshman Camille Lecrone making one stop and playing six minutes in her collegiate debut.
UMass will be back in action on Sun., Sept. 17, when the squad will return to face UMass Lowell in a 3 p.m. matchup.
