Former Men's Soccer Captain Matt Cushing Passes Away

NORTON, Mass. - University of Massachusetts Athletics mourns the loss of former men's soccer captain Matt Cushing, who passed away Monday, August, 28. Cushing, a 1988 UMass graduate, served as the head men's soccer coach at Wheaton College the past 23 seasons. He guided the Lyons to postseason play in all 23 campaigns, including an NCAA Tournament national semifinal finish in 2003, a national quarterfinal placement in 2001 and an additional eight NCAA bids.
 
Cushing was a captain for the Minutemen during the 1986 and 1987 and is survived by his wife, Jessica, and four children Connor, Charlie, Grace, and Emma.
 
There will be a public wake at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home in Sandwich, Mass., on Thursday, August 31 from 3-7 p.m. A GoFundMe campaign for the Matt Cushing Family Fund can be found here.
