McTear scores game-winning penalty corner goal
AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts field hockey picked up penalty corner goals from senior Sarah Hawkshaw and freshman Georgie McTear as the Minutewomen snuck by the University of Vermont, 2-1 at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex on Sunday afternoon. The win over the Catamounts sealed a undefeated opening weekend for the Minutewomen, which also included an 8-3 decision over Holy Cross on Friday.
Hawkshaw needed only 63 seconds to put Massachusetts in front by a goal. On the first penalty corner of the game, senior Melanie Kreusch sent a ball toward the right post, where Hawkshaw met the play and knocked the ball in, behind Vermont goalkeeper Lena Benwood.
The game-opening goal marked Hawkshaw's third of the season, all of which were scored in a 17-minute period of play including the end of the Holy Cross contest. It was her 34th career tally, tying her for ninth all-time in program history with Kyle Rothenberger (1993-96), Natalie Hart (1992-94) and Laura O'Neil (1977-80).
Vermont evened it at 1-1 in the 15th minute on a penalty corner of its own - one of their six drawn in the first half. Lauren Tucker drove a shot into the right side of the cage on feeds from Olivia Hurd and Kyra Lee.
The Minutewomen answered just more than six minutes later with freshman Georgie McTear's second career tally. McTear looped a corner shot over Benwood's padding and off the backboard for the eventual game-winner. Shauna Rankin-Byrne and Mirra Stillman earned assists on the play.
The Massachusetts defense locked down on Vermont in the second half and stymied thoughts of a rally. UMass limited the Catamounts to only three shots in the frame and one penalty corner try, while starting goalkeeper Emily Hazard turned aside one shot to preserve the advantage.
Vermont made one final push, attacking the UMass circle in the final minute of play; however, freshman Jenna Garber sealed the outcome when she intercepted a Catamount pass and pushed possession forward to Sarah Hawkshaw, who was able to control play until the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex scoreboard horn signaled the end of play.
The Minutewomen undertake their first road trip of the year next, with a Fri., Sept. 1 contest at California and a Sun., Sept. 3 game at No. 13 Stanford.
