Tourney Time: Tennis Takes on Florida Saturday in NCAA First Round

May 10, 2017 | Tennis

Minutewomen and Gators set for 1 p.m. match on Saturday in Gainesville.

AMHERST, Mass. - With final exams done and the final practice at the Mullins Courts complete, the UMass tennis team heads to Florida to take on the No. 1 overall seed Gators this Saturday (1 p.m.) in the NCAA Tournament First Round. The match, hosted at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex, will be streamed live on FloridaGators.com with live stats also available.

The winner of the match will go on to face the winner of the South Florida/Miami match that will take place earlier in the day.

For the Minutewomen, this marks the second time in program history for UMass to reach the NCAA Tournament. UMass last played in 2001 after winning the Atlantic 10 Championship title. Both league titles and NCAA appearances have come under head coach Judy Dixon who will retire following the season's conclusion.

The Minutewomen (12-7) earned this year's berth via a 4-2 win VCU in the Atlantic 10 Championship and have won five consecutive matches.

Despite losing the opening point to the Rams in the A-10 title match, doubles play has been an overall strength for UMass this season. In dual matches, the Minutewomen are 33-16 in doubles play headlined by a 14-4 mark from Janja Kovacevic and Ana Yrazusta. The combo of Brittany Collens and Laura Moreno has also worked well producing a 6-1 mark at No. 3 play.

In singles, Collens leads the team in wins with a 21-8 record with a 9-4 mark at No. 6 singles. Yrazusta is just behind with a 16-3 record primarily at No. 3 singles. Anna Woosley is 15-10 this year after securing the match-clinching point against VCU and is the active career leader on the team with 64 wins which ranks as the sixth most in program history.

Florida enters the NCAA Tournament with a 23-3 overall record after falling to Vanderbilt in the SEC title match. The Gators were 11-2 this year in SEC play and were 10-1 at home.

In addition to the opening rounds of the women's tournament, Florida will also be hosting the first two rounds of the men's tournament as well this weekend. Complete information on tickets and parking can be found at www.FloridaGators.com.
