Geannelis Tabbed Co-Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week

May 01, 2017 | Baseball

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball senior Mike Geannelis has been selected as the Co-Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. The honor is the first of the season for the Williamstown, Massachusetts, native and the second award of the year for a member of the Minutemen as freshman Nolan Kessinger was tabbed the A-10 Rookie of the Week back on March 20.

In a 3-0 victory over Dayton in the teams' series finale this past Sunday, Geannelis faced just one batter over the minimum in his second straight complete game shutout, allowing only three hits, all singles, on 84 pitches. He matched his career high in strikeouts with nine and did not walk a batter to improve to 5-4 on the season. The right-hander is the first UMass hurler to toss consecutive shutouts since Matt Torra did so in a pair of seven-inning contests in 2005 against St. Bonaventure and Temple.

On the year, Geannelis holds a 4.33 earned run average over nine starts, 62.1 innings, with a team-high 54 strikeouts to 13 walks. In Atlantic 10 play, he is the squad's ERA leader at 3.29 with a 4-1 record and 34 strikeouts to seven walks over 38.1 innings.

UMass will be back in action on Tuesday, May 2, when the team will wrap up its current home stand by hosting Hartford for a 3 p.m. contest.
