WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – University of Massachusetts baseball scored six runs over the final three innings to down North Dakota State, 9-5 on Tuesday afternoon at Chain of Lakes Stadium. The Minutemen improve to 3-4 following their third straight win, while the Bison fall to 7-9.
UMass opened the scoring in the top of the first. With freshman Nolan Kessinger and sophomore Ryan Lever aboard via singles, sophomore Cooper Mrowka knocked a two-out single through the right side to drive in Kessinger.
The Bison answered, however, with two runs on back-to-back two-out triples in the bottom half of the inning from Mason Pierzcharlski and Logan Busch.
North Dakota State added another run in the third to push its lead to 3-1. Tucker Rohde drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a single to left center by Ben Petersen and scored on a throwing error on the next play.
UMass tied things up at three in the top of the fifth. Back-to-back walks to senior Matt Bare and freshman Eddy Hart ultimately yielded a pair of runs courtesy of a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by sophomore Ryan Lever.
The Bison pulled back in front, 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth. Carter Thompson drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored on a single through the left side by Jake Malec.
In the top of the seventh, though, the Minutemen took the lead for good with three straight two-out hits. Kessinger kept the inning alive with a single to center and Lever followed with a double, setting up a two-RBI single from senior Mike Geannelis.
UMass increased its advantage to 7-4 in the top of the eighth. Hart walked and later crossed the plate on a single by Kessinger, while senior Jon Avallone scored via an error on the same play.
Though NDSU took one of the runs back in the bottom half of the inning, the Minutemen responded with two more insurance runs in the ninth, logging four hits in the frame, including an RBI single from sophomore Logan Greene and an RBI double from Bare.
Junior Kevin Hassett picked up the win (1-0) in relief, throwing 2.1 innings and allowing one run on two hits with two walks and one strikeout. Chris Choles surrendered two runs on three hits with a walk and a strikeout over an inning of work for the Bison and took the loss (1-1).
Mrowka (3-for-4), Greene (3-for-5) and Kessinger (3-for-4) combined for nine of UMass' 16 hits in the contest.
The Minutemen will be back in action tomorrow, March 15, when the squad will face Harvard at 10:30 a.m. in Punta Gorda, Florida.
