Hockey Bested by No. 3 BU, 3-1

February 03, 2017 | Hockey

THE BASICS:
RESULT: No. 3 Boston University 3, Massachusetts 1
LOCATION: Agganis Arena (Boston, Mass.)
RECORDS: Massachusetts (5-21-2, 2-13-1 HEA); Boston University (18-7-2, 11-4-2 HEA)

THE LEAD: University of Massachusetts hockey entered the third period in striking distance, trailing by only one goal, but No. 3 Boston University added an insurance tally in the final stanza to hold off the Minutemen, 3-1, on Friday night at Agganis Arena.

FIRST PERIOD:
After UMass killed off an early penalty that came 4 seconds into the contest, Boston University opened the scoring 3:37 into the first when Clayton Keller slid a puck under goaltender Ryan Wischow off a feed from Dante Fabbro and Brandon Hickey. The Terriers added another late in the frame with Fabbro scoring from the right point and Keller and Chad Krys picking up assists at the 14:40 mark.

SECOND PERIOD:
Senior Ray Pigozzi brought the Minutemen back within a goal 9:05 into the second, redirecting in a shot from freshman Shane Bear on the power play. Senior Steven Iacobellis earned an assist on the tally, as well.

THIRD PERIOD:
Despite some early chances for UMass in the third, the Terriers ultimately regained their two-goal cushion. Bobo Carpenter buried a puck from close range off a pass from Keller and Jordan Greenway below the goal line at the 10:24 mark.

FROM COACH CARVEL:
"I thought we had a poor first period, we allowed them get a 2-0 lead, which is difficult for us to overcome. I thought our second and third periods were better, but ultimately I thought we had the puck in good areas and weren't able to execute as much as we could have tonight. Most nights if we're to get into a special teams war, I don't think it's to our advantage, but tonight I thought our penalty kill was pretty good. Obviously the seven power plays they still had some chances, but I thought our power play worked the puck around pretty well at some points and had some good scoring chances. In a game with as many power plays as that, I actually thought it was a little bit to our advantage, suprisingly."

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Boston University out-shot the Minutemen, 45-29 in the contest and went 0-for-7 on the power play, while UMass was 1-for-6 with the man advantage.
  • The Minutemen won 34 of 63 (54.0%) on the night, led by Iacobellis' 16 for 26 (61.5%) effort over the dots.
  • Wischow totaled 42 saves in the contest, his second game of the season with 40+ stops. His counterpart, Jake Oettinger, turned aside 28 in net for BU.
  • Pigozzi's goal was his sixth of the season and sixth point (3g, 3a) in the past seven games.
  • Iacobellis' assist was his team-leading 10th of the year and squad-best 17th point. He now has 83 career points, tied for 24th in program history (T-20th in the Division I era).
  • Bear's assist marked his eighth point of the season, which leads all Minutemen defensemen.
UP NEXT: UMass will be back in action next Fri., Feb. 10, when the squad will return to Boston for a 7 p.m. Hockey East matchup at Northeastern.
