February 10, 2017 | Hockey
THE BASICS:
RESULT: Northeastern, Massachusetts 1
LOCATION: Matthews Arena (Boston, Mass.)
RECORDS: Massachusetts (5-22-2, 2-14-1 HEA); Northeastern (12-12-5, 6-9-3 HEA)
THE LEAD: University of Massachusetts hockey team was unable to overcome an early 4-0 deficit, dropping a 6-2 decision at Northeastern on Friday night in Hockey East play. The Minutemen trimmed the margin to two, but the Huskies pulled away with a pair of special teams goals from Zach Aston-Reese.
FIRST PERIOD:
UMass had its share of chances, but it was Northeastern that came out of the first with a 4-1 advantage. The Huskies opened the scoring just 16 seconds into the period with Nolan Stevens knocking the puck in from the top of the crease from Aston-Reese and John Stevens. Two Minutemen, Joseph Widmar and Ivan Chukarov, hit the cross bar in the first three minutes of the contest, but Northeastern only went on to expand its lead, starting with a goal from Dylan Sikura on a 2-on-1 at 10:58. The Huskies added two more 22 seconds apart with Adam Gaudette scoring on the power play at 16:43 and Nolan Stevens picking up the fourth of the stanza for Northeastern moments later. Freshman Jake McLaughlin put UMass on the board 18:40 into the period with his strike from the blueline after junior Dominic Trento fed him a rebound from Niko Hildenbrand's initial shot that was stopped by Ryan Ruck.
SECOND PERIOD:
The Minutemen made it a two-goal game 2:49 into the second. Freshman Shane Bear's shot from the point was deflected in front by Widmar and freshman Griff Jeszka managed to slip the puck in behind Ruck at the post. However, Northeastern responded with two tallies from Aston-Reese, shorthanded and on the power play, to widen the gap back out to four.
THIRD PERIOD:
The teams played a scoreless third that saw UMass out-shoot Northeastern 10-7 in the period. The Huskies had the lone power play of the frame.
FROM COACH CARVEL:
"Obviously score-wise the second and third were better. We competed for 60 minutes, but ultimately we shoot ourselves in the foot too often. We didn't make their skill guys work to score. I felt like we gave them a lot tonight. Obviously they're very good skilled forwards who put the puck in the net when given the opportunity and we can't put the puck in the net when we have our opportunities, so not a good combination."
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
UP NEXT: UMass will next travel to No. 9/10 UMass Lowell tomorrow night, Feb. 11, for a 7 p.m. meeting with the River Hawks at the Tsongas Center.
