February 14, 2017 | Women's Track & Field

AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts sophomore Emilie Cowan has been selected as the Atlantic 10 Track and Field Women's Co-Performer of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday. The Maplewood, New Jersey, native demolished her own school record in the 400m at the unscored David Hemery Valentine Invitational last Friday and has earned the weekly honor for a second time this season.

With a time of 53.67 seconds, Cowan took first place in a field of 159 competitors in the 400m at the Valentine Invitational and bested her previous UMass record in the event of 55.24, set in 2016. The time currently ranks 26th in the nation and first in the Atlantic 10 this season.

Cowan was also a part of the Minutewomen's 4x400 meter relay team last weekend, joined by Julia Witt, Lindsay Witt and Diamante Spencer who ran a combined time of 3 minutes, 50.96 seconds, an ECAC qualifying time that landed the squad 11th in a field of 50 teams.

UMass will next head to Fairfax, Virginia, looking to defend their 2016 title at the 2017 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field Championships. Competition is set for Saturday, Feb. 18 and Sunday, Feb. 19 and is hosted by George Mason.
