Hockey Outlasted by No. 9/10 UMass Lowell, 4-2

February 11, 2017 | Hockey

THE BASICS:
RESULT: No. 9/10 UMass Lowell 4, Massachusetts 2
LOCATION: Tsongas Center (Lowell, Mass.)
RECORDS: Massachusetts (5-23-2, 2-15-1 HEA); UMass Lowell (19-9-3, 11-7-1 HEA)

THE LEAD: University of Massachusetts hockey entered the third period level with No. 9/10 UMass Lowell, but the River Hawks managed two tallies in the third to defeat the Minutemen, 4-2 at the Tsongas Center on Saturday night. Senior Alex Wakaluk made 35 saves for UMass in his first start of the season.

FIRST PERIOD:
UMass Lowell opened the scoring when Dylan Zink, fresh out of the penalty box, put home a feed from Joe Gambardella and C.J. Smith on an odd-man rush 12:30 into the first period. The Minutemen answered just 1:18 later, though. Freshman Niko Hildenbrand stuffed a puck underneath River Hawks' netminder Tyler Wall from seniors Ray Pigozzi and Steven Iacobellis at 13:48.

SECOND PERIOD:
Michael Kapla put UMass Lowell up 2-1 at the 9:30 mark in the second, picking a corner from the point off a pass from Smith and Mattias Goransson. UMass answered again, though, to tie things up before the intermission. Jack Suter flipped the puck over Wall off a rebound from a Callum Fryer shot. Sophomore Joseph Widmar earned an assist on the play, as well.

THIRD PERIOD:
After Wakaluk made the initial stop, Gambardella pushed the puck over the goal line for the would-be game winner 11:07 into the third. The River Hawks added an insurance tally on a five-minute power play 14:12 into the third with Kapla and Ryan Lohin setting up Connor Wilson for a one-timer.

FROM COACH CARVEL:
"I thought tonight we came out and UMass Lowell took it to us for the first 10 minutes of the game. Luckily Alex Wakaluk was really good in net tonight, made a lot of big saves. He made some big saves look easy. I thought when we were able to tie the game, it gave us a lot of life and the rest of the way I thought we played pretty straight up. I don't think we deserved to beat Lowell, but we played them pretty straight up for the last 50 minutes of the game and I just feel for my kids because they come and they play hard every night. It's tough enough to beat Lowell straight up and tonight it seemed like they had to deal with some other factors too."

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • UMass Lowell out-shot the Minutemen 39-18 and went 2-for-4 on the power play, while UMass was 0-for-3.
  • Hildenbrand registered his fourth goal of the season, his second point of the weekend. He now has four points in the past four games to bring his total to eight on the year.
  • Iacobellis' assist was his team-leading 11th of the season and 54th of his career, tying him for 24th all-time in program history.
  • Pigozzi's assist was his 78th career point, moving him into the top-30 in program history. He is tied for 22nd all-time in career assists (55), as well.
  • Widmar's assist was his second of the weekend and third point in the last four games.

UP NEXT: UMass will have a quick turnaround as the squad will play host to Merrimack on Tue., Feb. 14, at 7 p.m. at the Mullins Center.
