A-10 leader Billikens use fast start, sharp shooting in win over Minutewomen.
AMHERST, Mass. - Using nine first half three-pointers and scoring 21 points off turnovers, Atlantic 10 leading Saint Louis defeated the UMass women's basketball team 81-60 at the Mullins Center on Wednesday night.
Records:
The loss drops UMass to 9-15 overall and 3-8 in Atlantic 10 play, while the Billikens improve to 18-5 overall and 8-2 in Atlantic 10 play.
UMass Leaders:
Maggie Mulligan led all scorers with 22 points while adding 14 rebounds for her 17th double-double of the season – the second-best total in the NCAA this year. Hailey Leidel also had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Saint Louis Leaders:
The Billikens had a quartet of players in double-figures led by Jenny Vliet and Jordyn Frantz who each scored 16 points. Sadie Stipanovich and Jackie Kemp each scored 14 points with Stipanovich also grabbing 10 rebounds.
Key Plays:
?Saint Louis hit six three pointers in the first half including their first four attempts in the game's opening three minutes of play. The Billikens led by as many as 19 points, but an Alyx Stiff three-pointer at the buzzer cut UMass' deficit to 28-12 heading into the second.
?The second quarter saw UMass close the gap to single digits, 44-36, thanks to a 10-to-2 run before intermission. Leidel converted a pair of three-point plays in the stretch as the Minutewomen held Saint Louis without a field goal for the last five minutes of the stanza.
?A 10-to-3 run to start the third quarter for the Billikens extended the lead to 15 points, 54-39, taking control of the balance of the second half.
Numbers Game:
For the game, the Billikens hit 44.8 percent of their field goals including 12-of-27 from beyond the arc. Saint Louis also committed just eight turnovers for the game. UMass hit 34.6 percent of its field goals but connected on just 4-of-16 three-point attempts. The Minutewomen were able to hit 20-of-27 free throws.
Fact of the Night:
Leidel became the all-time leading rookie scorer after tonight's effort with 403 points this season. Bria Stallworth broke the record last year scoring 393 points. Lediel needs 67 more points to reach 10th on UMass' single-season scoring list which would tie her with Sue Peters (470, 1979-80).
UMass will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 4 against Davidson for the annual Play4Kay Cancer Awareness game. Several promotions will be featured to bring awareness to research of women's cancers and the team will wear special pink uniforms as well.
