AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's soccer freshman forward Davis Smith became the 19th All-American in UMass program history as he was named United Soccer Coaches Third-Team All-America as announced by the organization on Thursday evening. Smith led UMass in goals, assists and points on his way to becoming the first Minutemen to receive All-America honors since Zack Simmons was named to the third-team in 2007.
Smith (Amherst, Mass.) was one of two freshmen to be an All-America selection as he posted team-best numbers in goals with 10, assists with seven and points with 27 on his way to earning multiple postseason awards. The forward became the first Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year for UMass since 1994 and was named first-team all-conference after ranking tied for second in the league in goals and points while finishing in a tie for third in assists. Smith helped the Minutemen secure their first A-10 Tournament title in 10 years with a goal and an assist in the championship game against VCU as UMass became the first team since 1991 to win the regular season title outright and the tournament championship.
Smith picked up his first career goal against Colgate on Sept. 16 in a win before grabbing his second a week later in a 3-0 win over Hartford, starting a stretch where the freshman scored six goals during a four-game span for 13 points.
UMass finished with the 2016-17 season with a 15-4-3 overall mark, the most wins by a Minutemen squad in the last 10 seasons on their way to earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
