Sophomore Ryan Wischow made 32 saves in the victory for the Minutemen.
HAMDEN, Conn. – University of Massachusetts hockey withstood a late charge from Quinnipiac and collected a hard-fought 2-1 victory on the road at Frank Perrotti, Jr. Arena on Friday night. The win levels the Minutemen at 6-6-0 on the season, while the Bobcats fall to 5-5-1.
After sophomore Ryan Wischow kept it scoreless with several big saves early on in the opening period, freshman Mitchell Chaffee put UMass on the board with the only goal of the frame. Chaffee extended his point streak to three straight contests, burring a backhand pass from freshman Oliver Chau from close range at the 11:46 mark.
Quinnipiac tied the score up at 1-1, 1:51 into the second period. John Furgele's hammered home a slap shot from the top of the right faceoff circle off a feed from Tanner MacMaster and Odeen Tufto out of the corner.
UMass was quick to regain the advantage, though. Freshman Mario Ferraro tucked a pass from classmate Jake Gaudet under the crossbar at the 4:02 mark.
The Minutemen continued to hold off the surging Bobcats in the third and finished the contest with 24 blocked shots, a season high for the squad. Quinnipiac out-shot UMass, 33-25 and went 0-for-3 on the power play, while the Minutemen were 0-for-6.
Wischow totaled 32 saves in the victory (3-1-0), while his counterpart, Andrew Shortridge, made 23 stops for the Bobcats.
"Getting the first goal was very important," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "To get it early helped us to get back in the game. I thought we were sluggish at the start, so that was a big goal. It helped us get our feet under us. Goals are at a premium in this building and Ryan Wischow made really sure of that tonight. That's the best goaltending performance I've had since I came to UMass. He stole a game for us tonight."
The teams will meet again tomorrow night, Nov. 25, in the second game of a home-and-home series at the Mullins Center at 7:30 p.m.
