Minutewomen force 18 UND turnovers despite setback

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – North Dakota's Lexi Klabo had 23 points to go with 13 rebounds as University of Massachusetts women's basketball fell to the Fighting Hawks, 82-52 on Sunday at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center. It was a difficult shooting day for the Minutewomen, who were held to 27.8 percent (20-for-72) from the field and 2-for-11 (18.2 percent) from three-point range.

Massachusetts drops to 2-2 with the loss, while North Dakota is 1-2 following the win.

Hailey Leidel and Bre Hampton-Bey contributed 11 points apiece for UMass in the setback. Maggie Mulligan had two blocks and Jessica George made three steals.

In spite of forcing nine first half turnovers the Minutewomen were unable to construct a lead during the opening 20 minutes. UND began the afternoon with an 8-2 run, and although UMass would narrow the Hawks' double-digit down to seven, UND wrapped up the second quarter with a late surge that sent the teams into halftime with a 39-24 score in favor of the home squad.

Hampton-Bey netted all of her 11 points in the first half, while Klabo had 14 of her own for the Hawks.

North Dakota kept up its dominant shooting in the second half with an even 50 percent (8-of-16) showing in the third quarter, during which it swelled its advantage to as much as 26 points. In the final stanza, the Hawks continued to add insurance, opening the frame with a 19-2 run that cemented the outcome.

In addition to Klabo North Dakota boasted double-figure scoring from Fallyn Freije (16), Jill Morton (16) and Melissa Dailey (11).

UMass now sets its sights on hosting the UMass Thanksgiving Classic from on Fri., Nov. 24 and Sat., Nov. 25 at the Mullins Center. The Minutewomen open the tournament on Friday with a 1 p.m. contest against in-state foe Northeastern.
