No. 8/7 Providence Powers Past Hockey, 7-2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Massachusetts knotted things up with No. 8/7 Providence after an early 1-0 deficit, but the Friars went on to score five times on the power play to hand the Minutemen a 7-2 setback on Saturday night at Schneider Arena. The loss leaves UMass at 5-6-0 overall 2-3-0 in Hockey East, while Providence improves to 6-4-0 on the year and 3-3-0 in league action.
The Friars opened the scoring 4:45 into the first period with Brian Pinho putting the puck home on the rush off a feed from Brandon Duhaime and Jacob Bryson.
Just 1:25 later, UMass was on the board with the equalizer. Freshman John Leonard buried a pass from classmate Philip Lagunov below the goal line for his fourth of the season. Freshman Mitchell Chaffee earned an assist on the play, as well, his third point of the weekend.
However, Providence proceeded to capitalize on its first three opportunities with the man advantage of the night, closing out the opening period with three power-play goals. Scott Conway knocked in a rebound at 9:21 that put Providence back on top and Ben Mirageas and Pinho found the back of the net at 12:45 and 16:44, respectively, to stretch the Friars' lead to 4-1.
Providence opened the second period with Mirageas' second power-play tally of the night at the 4:12 mark before UMass answered 13:54 into the stanza. Freshman Marco Bozzo took a centering feed from juniors Austin Plevy and Kurt Keats and redirected it home at the top of the crease for his second of the season.
Providence capped the scoring with two in the third period from Erik Foley and Kasper Bjorkqvist at 11:29 and 18:18, respectively.
The Friars out-shot UMass 46-30 in the contest and went 5-for-8 on the power play, while the Minutemen were 0-for-4.
Matt Murray finished the night with a season-high 39 saves for the Minutemen and Hayden Hawkey made 28 stops for Providence.
UMass will be back in action on Fri., Nov. 24, when the squad will open a home-and-home vs. No. 16 Quinnipiac in Hamden, Connecticut at 7:30 p.m.
